The kitty litter bucket pannier.

I've checked out a couple how-to's for this project, but they are all so different as to what types of hooks to use, whether or not it is necessary to use a piece of plywood on the inside of the bucket for support, etc.

 

I'm sure I've seen pics of bikes on here with these panniers. I'm wondering if anyone cares to share a quick rundown of how they made theirs. What kinds of hooks, how they attached it to the bottom part of their rack for stability, etc. I can get by with just a quick recap of hardware and mounting techniques.

 

I made one out of an old container from a broken paper shreader I had laying around and some S hooks from home depot, but it was too small, so now I'm looking to make a new one.

I made one out of a kitty litter container.  I used a couple of inverted small coat hooks for the top to hook on to a back bike rack and a bungee to hook on to the bottom of the back rack.  Check out crazyguyonabike.org (or com).  There are some articles on there on how to build them.  I just used washers and nuts for the backing in the inside of the bucket.  I suppose you could use wood but something like a strip of aluminum would be lighter.  You can get a strip of aluminum at menards or a hardware store.

I was thinking that a strip of aluminum bent into a hook would be stronger than coat hooks -and then back the other side with another strip of that same aluminum.

 

I need to get me some of those square kitty litter buckets.  I have 2 but they are presently "occupied" at the time being and I don't think I'd like to put my groceries in them ever.  There isn't enough bleach in the world.  Fresh litter is one thing...

I have two yellow Kitty Litter tubs if you want them.  Unfortunately I dont have the lids.  I can friend you if you want to make arrangements to pick them up.

That is very tempting Chixieonfixie,  Let me think on that for a bit.  The ones I have now are also ones I found on Freecycle.  Free is good.  I always buy my clay litter in the cheapo bag so I had to source the square bins for more compact storage on both ends of the "spectrum."  They are both pretty gross inside at this date for use as panniers.  Plus i wouldn't have storage for kitty litter and used liter.

 

I might take you up on your generous offer.  I'll cogitate on it while riding mass.  Do poeple find the lids very helpful when using this type of hard pannier? 

 

How far From Logan Square are you?

if there are any other cat lovers here who use the plastic litter buckets, please save them.  i wouldnt mind making a whole bunch of these to share.

try going to instructables.com, if you don't find an exact how-to on this specific project idea, they'll have more than enough resources that will inspire your design.

 

Great idea, by the way!  my whole apt is organized out of those litter buckets, never thought of this.

I use rope hooks on mine. You can get them at Home Depot- they're usually by the chain. Haven't had any trouble with them without using any backing. I just make sure to use larger washers on the inside. The bungee with hook attached holds it on while empty. Haven't really attached the bottom to the bike, but if you wanted you could use some c-clips attached to the bucket, run the bungee through those, and that would help hold the bottom to the bike. But I've never had any problems without them. I use a larger bucket now, but this is the basic setup.

And here's a picture of my LHT with the larger bucket, same attachment method. I can fit my whole CSA load in here without a problem. I think I've transported like 10 bottles of wine in the big one without a problem.
