I'm totally new to winter riding and I'm having a great time so far! Rides are a little slow for my taste, but I'll get over that.  I'm riding Chet, my Gary Fisher MTB, which is a perfect bike for winter.

I do miss the geometry of my road bike. I have a feeling it's going to be harder to ride that bike when I make the switch. I rode it one day before the snow fell and somehow my legs/hips were kind of uncomfortable for the first time. I have a feeling that next year I'll have a fender and tire setup that suits my Trek and makes it possible to ride her in the winter. By next year, I'll also probably have my riding gear down pat and be happier on drop bars. (See! I like it so much, I'm already looking forward to next year :))

"BBRRRRR" said the legs.   "Why am I sweating?" said the torso.

So apparently just tights and shorts doesn't keep my legs from freezing, and wool long-sleeve base layer and windbreaker is too warm for my upper body.

Maybe I am crazy as one of my co-workers thinks.  I just hope my legs hurt from yoga last night and not from cold-induced muscle damage.

Here's to the sometimes-insane Bike Winter!

Crazy? My co-workers have named my bike "Death Wish".........

Yes, surprisingly just one, you biking boogeyman. :)

Today's commute was even better than yesterday's, since I remembered to wear my tights under my pants :)... But, I was sorta saddened by the thought that I saw a mere three other cyclist on my commute down Clark from Lawrence to Madison.  I felt like maybe there was something that I didn't know, like is there a better street than Clark? Or is just that peeps have dropped out for the winter?  Either way, I smiled at all the cyclists that I saw and if you could, try to bike down Clark too!

I bike down Clark from Montrose to Grand everyday. I haven't found a better route..

Clark sucks big time between Waveland and Armitage. Too many cars, pedestrians, you name it. Especially in the afternoon.

I use Clark to Southport to Lincoln to Wells. Works well for me.

Also the number of bicyclists I see can be a matter of minutes. When a leave early I only see a few. When I leave a little later (five minutes or so) I tend to see a multitude of cyclists. It depends a little on where you fall in the morning rush.

I leave from Montrose as well.  I use Broadway/Halsted/Lincoln/Wells.  Google Map it and you'll see it's one of the straightest shots to the loop.  Until I discovered this route, I used Clark as well; I find the Clark route more car congested and more affected by lake wind (esp when out of East).

I rode today and it was really enjoyable. My hands were still cold despite the layers so I am seriously considering the lobster gloves.

I am finally getting over a 2 week bout with a cold and flu and took my first real "winter" ride today and found it pretty decent out. I am still a bit frightened of the thick slushy areas where the cars keep pushing me into, but otherwise, pretty nice ride all around, even if I was a bit chilled in my toes and fingers.   I looked for other bicyclists, but there were none to be found which made me sad. I must either leave too early or too late to catch anyone else going south on Lincoln to Wells (in the morning, around 7- 7:15 leaving from Lincoln/California to downtown).
