There's this comment from Elliot Bennett with a route from Chicago to Muskegon.

And Google suggests this for Muskegon to East Lansing. Holland to East Lansing looks to be more of a straight shot over, but it uses more roads apparently.
I second the Musketawa Trail. It's pretty awesome. Here's what (some of) it looks like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jknecht/3575404813/

But Muskegon is a little out of the way. Indiana has good trails most of the way to MI. Once in MI, it's a little less trail-ified. I rode a lot of highway shoulder miles when I rode to Ann Arbor last year. If you wanted to ride up to Milwaukee and then ferry it across, you could do the Musketawa. That was my return route and I rode just a tad south of Lansing, through some nice farmland roads before hitting the trail from just west of Grand Rapids to Muskegon.

The trail and biker friendly roads route to downtown Milwaukee can be found on my Chainlink page - if you wanted to know. However there are no instructions on getting to the ferry. The trails through Racine county are much improved these days - paved like the Chicago North Branch Trail! It might be best to spend the night camping at Cliffside park and then try to make the ferry the next morning.

Link to Chicago-Milwaukee route (click here) - I strongly recommend using the Chicago-Milwaukee-Green Bay GPS (Garmin) or KML (Google Earth) as it heads to the Milwaukee lakefront directly using Milwaukee County trails. Very green and woodsy!
thanks guys, i look into those trails :)
