I saw one of the stop sign stings for bikers this morning on Wells Street.  It was pretty obvious as to what it was, but people were still blowing through the stop sign.

 

Anyone here get caught?  Any thoughts on this?

 

One thing that I thought was funny was this girl who passed me while I was stopping, and then was flagged over and still tried to go.  The police stepped in front of her...it looked like she was going to make a break for it, but she ended up stopping.

Well, you must be getting to work too early. I went through around 8:45. It was between at Evergreen Ave. I didn't see any cars stopped and there weren't any that went by when I was there.

However, I do have to say that at least cars usually stop when they see a police officer...or slow down to the speed limit...even if they don't at other times.

While this should be enforced for all road users, keep in mind that blowing a stop sign carries graver danger for a cyclist than a motorist.

They were out last night at Wells/Lincoln around 9PM.
Just talked to my bike commuting coworker and she got pulled over. Essentially the sting just lectures cyclists and gives them a brochure on following the rules of the road.

While I came to a full and complete stop for this stop sign, I didn't for the majority of my commute...or any commute. Do you come to full and complete stop, Ryan? I won't complain if I'm busted for it, but proceeding with caution through stop signs makes sense...I can see obstacles clearly and can assess the risks.

Most people overestimate their own traffic handling skills.
Ridiculous! Why don't they pull over the 10+ cars that pass me within 3 feet every time I ride and lecture them? This is just more evidence that the CPD is anti bike.
If the stop is just for a lecture and they've been having lots of real problems at that particular intersection, then I don't really see it as anti-bike. At busy intersections, I usually slow down and time it so that I go through with a car next to me, but I think we've all seen bikers who just fly through certain intersections assuming cars will stop or slow down for them. Lincoln/Wells (the corner Julie mentioned) northbound is notorious for this in my experience, I see kids zoom through there all the time in dangerous ways. Ticketing is overkill, but a quick verbal reminder seems like a reasonable thing to do periodically.

That said, is this Wells/Evergreen northbound or southbound? If northbound, I take back everything I said; isn't that a three-way corner? There's absolutely no safety-related reason for bikes to stop at most three-way corners, that's just stupid.

For this type of sting, I'd also like to see cops differentiate between those who are crossing safely vs. those who aren't as opposed to a strict "you must stop" interpretation, but that's probably not possible given the various constraints on the CPD.

As a person who lives in front of a three-way stop, I can't count the times I've nearly been Schwinned when trying to cross the street. Many times blatant, more often inadvertent, but it seems most cyclists pay even less attention to pedestrians when cars aren't a threat.
