i said it more in jest, but there is truth to it. those promoters will get your email and use it any which way they can! that's their business.

they just want your email address so than can spam you, all under the guise of letting you vote. ; )
oh, now i get what you're saying. definitely! from a reporter's perspective. after i have emailed band managers asking for a specific artist interview request, it sometimes works out. but 95% of the time they PUT ME on their press release mailing list and send me info on all of the artists they represent. i mean, come on! they know our radio station has a music director and that i am not it. same thing with non profits. don't get me wrong but sheesh! whatever happened to the professional follow up email or call instead? like, "hey how are you at ___insert media outlet here." i take the time to follow up and chat with exec directors and promoters and pr people, personalized correspondence...and it's like i am a dumping ground for their press releases. maybe i ought to include some kind of filter on gmail. i get so many emails now, i have to spend a couple of hours weeding through my accounts. i've opened important emails days, months, weeks later because of the spam they send me.

i just want to promote a good friend of mine. i will never end up like that.

ya, time for that bike ride for real. i have been on this computer all day.

There's an option when you vote to enter your cell phone number in order to win tickets and merchandise . . . very tempting but having my phone alerting me to utter crap while I'm working will make me homicidal . . . a little extra e-mail spam, however-- few extra pokes of the "delete" key, no big deal. And I'll bet pretty much everyone has a "junk" gmail account they use for this sort of thing.
