Let's Stop Bitching about the Oil Spill and DO SOMETHING

I want to organize a fundraising event, or a series of them if it's a popular idea. Let's do something besides ride around booing at gas stations, guys. Let's be a proactive community of advocates for cleaner, healthier transportation and send a positive message to our city.

I'm thinking the first of such events could be a "by-donation" bike wash. Let's get out our chain-brite, our toothbrushes, our chain cleaners, our rags, etc and spend a Saturday cleaning bikes, say at the Polish Triangle or some other popular intersection for bike traffic.

Then let's send all that money to a relief fund for the Gulf. Maybe we have employers who will match our contributions? Maybe ActiveTrans will sponsor? Who knows?

Also, I'd love to make spoke cards to hand out to anyone who donates any amount of money for the event.

I'm just tired of being a bitch about it. I want to feel like I did something, and my limited ability to actually travel south and clean the coast with my hands means I have to clean something here and send money to the people who ARE more capable than I am!

So what do you guys think? Can we do this?

Not this coming Saturday as they will be closed. It's John's daughters wedding. ;-) The old softy get's all teary eyed.

I think we stick to the Gulf. You did a great job finding the Children's Foundation so I have faith in ya! ;-) The clean up there is a years long effort. But no that the leak is capped this is gonna vanish from headlines.

And I'll need to know a charity before i call my buddy. ;-) Adds strength to his proposal to MGMT if we already know. ;-)
Yea, next saturday, the 24. Otherwise, the 31st

I can't think about all that stuff this weekend though. Let's re-group after Sunday.

24th seems cool! ;-) And if i get some time to research I'll try and get a list together. ;-) See you at Marauders? ;-)
maybe we can do it in logan square next time tons of bikers ride around the square all the time im sure new wave cafe wouldn't mine us using their big sidewalk? just a thought of a new location not saying S&G wasn't

Definitely a great idea, but John said he would offer up 5 or 10% of his sales if we did it again

Yeah - another location is cool if we grow the group. But S&G's for this one again is the right thing to do as John has done well by us. Perhaps next summer when we start this up again we can have multiple spots on the same day. :-) I'll let Martin and PJ know you want a shirt.
Dude, right on :) John is awesome. So the 24th for the lunch thank you john ride then?

Looked at the Calendar and there are several rides on the 24th that will steal thunder. Perhaps Sunday, the 25th? There are 2 other events that day that are local but both are after lunch or later!
