I don't know if anyone saw this, but I think it is awesome and more cities should start doing this.

We've had some lightly-used bike lanes removed soon after they were striped, because backed-up motorists want to get by congestion by passing on the right...and don't want to be ticketed.

Just curious, but where was this at?
I ride all year long so I have no problems with more places to put my bike in the winter.

We discussed bike parking, and the conversion of car spaces to bike parking a couple of months ago...see p. 6 of the discussion.

My only concern would be that this seems fine in the summer, where there are lots of folks on bikes seeking parking. But what about the other 9 months? Wouldn't the responsible alderman get a lot of grief from constituents who're looking for parking, and see two wasted empty spaces with no bikes? We've had some lightly-used bike lanes removed soon after they were striped, because backed-up motorists want to get by congestion by passing on the right...and don't want to be ticketed.
Yeah, but this is Vancouver we're talking about. Alot more people bike year-round up there than here. Those racks won't be yanked anytime soon.

And any progressive urban planner will tell you that simply providing more parking in response to driver complaints is how you end up with car-centric cities.

Yeah, in the winter there are plenty of places to lock up, but not in the summer months. It's slim pick'ns!
