HOLY $*&!, I did something really creepy today. Are these your stolen wheels?

I was walking around Uptown today and came upon this dude carrying two front wheels with the bolts still on. This looked very suspicious to me so I snapped a photo and took some video. I followed him home and watched him enter his place. Are there your wheels?

I am not sure what to do about this.

An image of the dude.

BTW, the new iPhone is insanely bad ass. Would not have been able to get such a good shot and any video at all with my older phone, especially so quickly.
I thought about that Howard. Gonna call U.B. and Johnny Sprockets. After looking at the photo I now realize the right wheel is actually a rear single speed hub.

Was I wrong to take this photo and assume these are stolen? I have seen this guy before leaving the same building he went into today (on a bike) so I know he lives there. Not sure if posting a pic is "ok" but I figured since I didn't post his face it was kosher.

I actually jumped on my bike and rode around Uptown and Andersonville looking for any bikes with missing wheels. Didn't find any.
True Howard, my #1 concern was to put it on the interwebs in case someone on these boards did in fact get their wheel jacked. I have seen larger miracles play out on chainlink so I figured what the hell :)

And it's the left not the right that is a rear fixed hub. Man, my dyslexia is getting the best of me today.

On another tech note, while driving around today I caught video of a junk trunk that was hella dangerous. I can't believe those things are legal. Gonna get the video up soon.
i've seen that tire on a friend of mine's bike. where the wheels by any chance velocity deep vs in yellow color? false alarm, my buddy just returned my call and his wheels are intact.
Thanks for taking the picture and being proactive. It's nice to see people taking pics to document what they think might be happening, whether or not they are stolen, just in case they are stolen. I dont think it's wrong to post it because his face isnt showing.
That being said, unfortunately I have such a low opinion of CPD with regards to stolen bikes that I think if you had a cop there watching a bike being stolen he'd just shrug and say "there's nothing I can do about it". So IMHO, if you were to determine that the wheels were stolen and brought the pics to the police, I dont have faith that they would do anything about it.
Very true. The cops had a guy in their car once when I caught him grinding a lock and later let him go. There is a good chance these wheels belong to the dude carrying them. However being overly cautious about this sort of thing is a good thing. It seems if cyclists don't look out for each other no one will.

It's very cool that people are taking initiative against bike theft, but don't you think that posting a photo of some random individual along with an unsubstantiated suggestion that they might be a thief kinda edging the bounds of civility? Even though it's a photo of his back it still makes him easily identifiable to anyone that may know him. It's like the when-did-you-stop-beating-your-wife of online decorum.
I'd like to propose striking up a conversation as a more effective alternative. "Nice wheelset, man. Are those sheriff star hubs?"
Um, I was going to say something like "hey man, nice wheels" or "holy shit! your tats are rad to the max" but in all honesty nothing I could say would have tipped me off one way or the other. Photos speak a thousand words you know. Then again, which way is it promoting? Is it in favor of good, or of that which is the dark sidel?
Alright! The truly scary thing about my own post is that I stalked this guy. Now I thought I was in the right but what if I am wrong? Has placing this mans image online put me at risk of something negative? We live in a strange world of instant video capture and implementation unto the world. I feel weird.
I think you need a Schlitz Tall Boy!
