Portland stomped us in turnout for the Naked Ride.

I saw the posting earlier and have been racking my brain as to why Chicagoans, many on this very site, wouldn't attend an event like World Naked Bike Ride-Chicago.

This is an event that stands for several important causes from less cars and less oil to positive body image and safety for cyclists (shows how naked we are on that bike.).

It's also a ride that you can attend or help out with in various manners and different level of dress (or undress) something we call "Bare as you Dare".

Portland is about 1/5th the size of Chicago, not counting Chicagoland and they had about 6x the turnout as we did.

Gotta tell ya Chicago, that's PATHETIC!

So why didn't you come to Naked Ride? There are more of you that didn't than did so why didn't you feel this was important? Was it religion? Poor body image? Weather? Or is it just not important to you?

I'd really like to hear good reasons to not attend.

I have a strong feeling this will just end up falling off the board cause people hate facing there own weakness but maybe getting called out will get you off your duff for next year!

I know that this is going to surprise some of you but I have an opinion on this...

First off I hate to disagree with you Gabe but the naked ride is less about protest then it is about taking off your pants for most people who participate; if it really where about the environment we would not have left the park looking like a haz-mat zone when we left. I'm sure some of the people on the ride are there as a legitimate protest action but I think a solid percentage of them are just there because it's a chance to party naked in the street and/or to skulk about and be scope the boobies. In fact when you read the ride instructions it does make it seem like the protest aspect of it is just a way to work the law into allowing you to be naked in the streets.

Personally I will never ride the naked ride nude (lets not even get into my issue with it being called the 'naked' ride and the use of naked vs. nude...) because I think that the second you drop your pants and head out into the streets, as a group or alone, a huge percentage of the people who see you are going to write you, and your cause, off as a crackpots. We can debate all day long if it is right or wrong for them to judge but it does not change the facts regarding many peoples judgment.

As to why Portland gets such a large ride? Because Portland has a higher concentration of full on hippies, simple as that. We may be a much larger urban area but we are made up of a much more conservative demographic.
I'm not sure that I would want a naked ride with those numbers either. As it was, there were people drinking from glass bottles on the ride and one broke about 20' ahead of me. I understand that people would be drinking (amongst other things) on the ride. Hell I woul'd have but I had to carry my friends bag full of crap that he didn't need. That will be the last time for that. Anyway I can only imagine the number of douche bags that would show up with numbers that large. I like the fact that people are surprised when the naked ride comes. So many people on the sidelines I hear on their phone saying "OMG your not going to believe this, about 1000 people just rode by naked!"

Seriously people though next year a little more ass and absolutly no glass. Thats dangerous.
Yeah, I found the glass thing very ignorant; I think that should be enforced next year.

With the number of wipe-outs I witnessed a broken bottle in the middle of the street could have taken things from bad to worse in a hurry.

No one wants glass in their twinkie.
Are you kidding me? Glass bottles on a bike ride??? Being someone that rides on tubulars rather frequently I'll chalk this up as reason number five.

Gabe troll is best troll.

I did the ride in 2007, and had a blast. I didn't go this year because of the weather, but the real reason was that I didn't want to ride home alone to Rogers Park afterwards, since no one I knew seemed into it this year. That's all.

Is that okay.

We have a team of trained counselors standing by to provide advice and reassurance, but unfortunately they're all at lunch right now.

Critical Feelings, second monday of every month. Lots of injuries incurring from attempting to hug while riding, still working out some of the kinks.
Nice somewone will have to paint that on them

Don't listen to her, Don't let people push you around, say exactly what you want to say and how you want to say it. This place has been polluted for a long time anyway, and I am glad I can always piss someone off no matter what I say or how I say it. It is a sign of greatness.

Out of town for a family reunion to see my elderly relatives before they all die. Sorry that reason wasn't good enough for you.
I was out of state :-( I wanted to be there, and I would have brought people. promise ill be there next time, just don't hate me
Well despite Aaron ,actual results have occurred while I am at work.

Jack, I drive a truck for a living (oddly it uses gas too - but I'd be happier if it had a hydrogen fuel cell). As i've said for the umpteenth time there is more than one reason for the ride. How about just plain old visiblity. Are you impervious to being struck by a car? I'm not and i want to show that. Also for the millionth time no one has to ride naked. There are a ton of different ways to participate and a lot of them include wearing clothes!

To the peeps that said it's not a competion, again. Read the thread. I never said it was. I asked a question. Why can Portland get numbers but we can't? And there were some good answers but most seemed to make fun of Portland. My view point would be that the crackpots over there the anarchists and the hippies and the crusties GOT OFF THEIR COLECTIVE ASSES! Fuck yeah for them. Makes me feel like i live in a lazy, apathetic city.

For Finch, that's great input as far as riding home alone. There were many people from Rogers Park at the ride. Perhaps that is something that can be added to the WNBR-C website. "Find a friend to ride with". Thanks for that! :-)

For Doug, you are 100% correct. The way Oz park was left is a disgrace. And it's an easy solve that I already noted for myself for next year. The Security crew on the sides will have trash bags. I'll buy a box and hand 'em out. We're already there. Why not? Also for glass, sadly it's tough to regulate every idiot but we can add that to the security briefing at the beginning. and maybe to the site as well. And we can post signs at the entrance.

For Jenn whose family is gonna die, would you have come if you weren't outta town?

Glen, See ya next year! ;-)

For the dude in the bear suit. If you wanna look at pics I'm sure you can find the website. If you don't come on the ride I think you are fat or have issues or both. You should embrace who you are and get out there. There were people of every shape and size. Some painted some not some clothed most not. Glad you are working hard to lose weight and ride your bike. There is nothing wrong with what you got unless you think so and staying home says you think there is something wrong. Face your demons dude!

And for those that wanna call me a troll or say that I sound like a jerk. I am a jerk. ;-) But I'm an active jerk. I want things to be better, and will get in people's faces. If i didn't i wouldn't be me. Just like you sitting there being lazy makes you, you!
so can I coat myself in Vaseline next ride and eat spam the whole time?
