Note: Artists may send packets at any time before this date.

Send a CD Rom with images of 6-10 recent works (please include dimensions), resume, address, phone number, email address, artist’s statement and website/online gallery (if applicable) to the Mailing Address: Aurora Public Art Commission, 44 E. Downer PL., Aurora, IL 60507. If you would like the packet returned please include a self addressed, adequately stamped envelope, and it will be sent after April 16, 2010. Priority will be given to artists who have never exhibited with APAC. Artists chosen to exhibit may show existing works or they may create new work specifically for DreamCycles. The curators may request works that were presented on the CD Rom.

 

DreamCycles

All Weather/Utility Bicycles and Other Active Transportation, Public Transit, Sustainable Garden Design, New Energy and Useful Work

 

The Aurora Public Art Commission (APAC) is seeking 2D, 3D and multi-media works concerning all weather/utility bicycles and other active transportation, public transit, sustainable garden design, new energy and useful Work. Note: APAC is accepting submissions of both indoor and large-scale outdoor sculptures. See page three for Sculpture Garden prospectus.

 

DreamCycles will creatively address the practical issues of:

·         bicycles (and other active transportation) as primary transportation,

including safety, year round cycling, on street striped bike lanes, etc.

·         public transit systems

·         small scale local food farming and landscape restoration with native plants

·         new energy science 

·         local economic networks/productive work in the new economy

 

Artists may choose any or all of these themes, and are asked to approach their chosen subject(s) with ingenuity, resourcefulness, imagination, pragmatism, whimsy and even hilarity.  

 

The exhibit will be curated by Rena Church, Director/ Curator, Aurora Public Art Commission and Steve Lowery, Professor of Art, Aurora University

 

Aurora Public Art Commission (APAC):

APAC is a division of the Department of Community development, City of Aurora. The Public Art Commission provides a formal art presence for the residents of the City of Aurora and surrounding communities. General functions include selecting sites for sculpture and other art forms, selecting artists, overseeing projects, developing programs in art education, and establishing an exhibition schedule for the APAC Gallery. APAC exhibits feature works by regional, national, and international artists. In addition, the Public Art Commission supports a variety of initiatives promoting public awareness of the positive value of diversity in Aurora.

Aurora Public Art Commission Sculpture Garden:

The Aurora Public Art Commission Sculpture Garden was established

in 2006 for the purpose of showcasing rotating sculpture exhibits of

exceptional quality.

1. Entry is open to all sculptors.

 

2. Deadline For Entry: April 16, 2010

    Exhibit Dates for sculpture garden: June 11-October 17, 2010

    Reception: Friday, June 11, 2010

 

3.  Criteria: Work will be juried by art professionals and will be judged on artistic quality, craftsmanship, maintenance requirements, and safety to the public.

 

4.  Safety, size and durability are important considerations. The Aurora Public Art Commission Sculpture garden is not enclosed and is therefore accessible at all times. Sculptures must be crafted from materials that are appropriate for extended display in a public outdoor space. Sculptures must be large and heavy enough to discourage theft and/or vandalism and all works must have features that make it possible for them to be anchored to the ground.

 

5.  Interactive sculptures that can be entered or climbed or walked upon must comply with City of Aurora building codes.

 

6.  Artists are responsible for delivery, installation, and removal of sculptures.

The City of Aurora will provide limited assistance and supervise installation of all sculptures.

 

7.  If a pedestal is required for presentation it must accompany the sculpture.

 

8.            All works will be considered for sale unless they are indicated as NFS. The Aurora Public Art Commission will take a 30% commission on all sales. 

 

9.  Works must remain on display for the duration of the exhibit—from the opening date until the closing date.
