Does anyone know if the lakefront trail is rideable right now? I want to ride from 53rd Hyde Park to Belmont. Anyone have any recent experience with what patches I should expect? I know the S curve is probably still coated, but anyone know anything else?

Haven't been on it in a while, but watch out at Fullerton. And with the recent not-so-cold days, there may be some isolated spots where the snow on the side of the trail has started to melt, but the run off has frozen over on the trail at night or in the shade. Just watch out when making fast or sharp turns.
I was one it like 2 weeks ago and the section with the high wall, I guess Oak St maybe, was covered with chunky scary ice all over. I don't think it was rideable. I skipped it and got off the trail and dodged cars instead. Way easier.
Right past North ave and right before the fullerton exit there is a section where you have to ride off the trail and onto a dirt detour. The trail was impassable and blocked off by the city.
I ride from 51st street in Hyde Park to Monroe Street Harbor daily, and the path is currently clear and ridable the entire way. Supposed to snow tomorrow, so stay tuned.
I just rode it today on my way in. It is good (going southbound from Diversey at least) until Oak St;
then it's not so great. I walked to about Chicago then rode the upper lip sidewalk; etc to Ohio St.

Hello LFT riders,

Anyone can comment on the most recent post at www.activetrans.org/lakefront to help keep it updated on conditions, etc. We greatly appreciate any input from folks that are riding the trail every day.

Active Trans is working to expand our LFT advocacy work in 2010. Current plans could include increased communication on the lakefront trail page (potentially with volunteer help), educating users trail etiquette, partnering/pushing the park district on maintenance and improvements, coordinating with Chicago Area Runners Association and Friends of the Parks, and more.

We will certainly keep the Chainlink community posted when efforts are finalized.

Thanks much,
Ethan, with Active Trans
I rode back to Hyde Park (47th St.) this evening (Friday) around 6:00 pm and there was snow on the path, but not very deep, perhaps 1.5 inches or 2 in the deepest places. It was blustery, however. Cyclists going north against the wind were weaving around but staying up.
The S curve is dicey at times. Any reason why this can't be salted too?
Rode the full length this morning. There are many sections that are completely impassable on a road bike... I was on cx tires and it wasn't a problem. (Well, aside from the Oak St Beach detour).
Lakefront Path conditions, Sunday morning February 7, 2010 from 57th St to the Aquarium: mostly clear, dry pavement, with sections of clear track through snow and ice sections. About 30 yards of solid, rough ice at the north side bottom of the rise at 35th Street. No clear track through this mess, consider walking and take care descending going north. Also ride carefully under the tree overhang section around 38th Street. If riding after dar be very careful as the open track through the slick spots is very difficult to see. Studded tires at night, highly advisable for now. But it was a great morning for riding in the sun.

The LFP from 51st to Monroe Harbor is basically in the same shape as David described from yesterday. I hope that someone does something about that ice at 35th prior to it getting buried in snow over the next two days!
