A friend pointed me at the USA Track and Field association web site which has running routes and allows new routes to be added. It turns out that cyclists have discovered this site and are recording cycling routes as well as running routes. Check out http://www.usatf.org/routes/

He says the interface is better than MapMyRide.com and in fact you can export a route from USATF and import it into MapMyRide.

I found a bunch of routes by setting the distance to 30 miles and then selecting Illinois. For shorter routes, most running routes are just fine for cyclists. Runners also can use paths or passage ways that vehicles can't use.

Damn...my 15-minute "edit period" ended before I completed my post above...I wonder why Leah has set such a short time to edit? A lot of posts I read could use a dose of heavy editing! :-)

I think my link to MMR (above) is better than the MapMyRide link provided on Chainlink because it has that "Route Type" toggle. For instance, if you toggle to "Commute" you get 29 recommended commuting routes into Chicago, some of which I think are very good.
