The Chainlink

One of the things I'd like to do in the year ahead is travel with my bike more. To save some money and make it easier on myself, I'd like to learn how to take apart my bike and put it back together. Right now my tool box consists of a lonely hex wrench set. I don't want to get a whole shop-style tool setup, but what are the must-have tools I'll need?
Thanks much!

great thread Leah (I am making mental notes).

I recommend a good multi-tool (for the under seat bag)
also a good (long handled) pdeal wrench
I have a nice set of allen wrenches with ergonomic handles I use a lot
Never sieze on your pedal threads. They will come right off
Mine was an older model but this looks like it's made of the same soft metal. Be wary, these can break and strip out very easily. Mine had at least 4 stripped heads on it when I broke one of the ends off and cut my hand on it. Plus there isn't much leverage to really get something tightened down properly.

My friend Laura introduced me to this tool last weekend:

It comes in super handy! It's also nice and small, so it easily fits into your bag, and it's only $4.99 with free shipping on Ebay.
This is my absolute favorite multi-tool; i.e. 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, and 8mm hex wrenches; 8mm, 9mm, and 10mm socket wrenches; and a straight blade screwdriver. Light weight. Portable.

One of the smarter ideas I've seen is changing out the screws or using components ALL with 5mm cap heads. Wheels go off with QR. Everything else to pack the bike could be adjusted/removed/reinstalled with a 5mm allen wrench. Think about it...
Kevin, I have to agree with you on that one. Plus, it is just one of the most beautifully forged tools I've seen in a while. It looks great and has a nice heft in your hand.

I like this multi-tool (it even has a bottle opener, I just learned).

I also have a Topeak road morph (with pressure guage) that has worked fine for over two years now. Otherwise, I just bought the unique tools my bikes needed for me to disassemble it (thin wrenches, gear removal tools, bottom bracket removal tools).
