Harm to Head Halted

Consider this my little PSA for the day.

WEAR A HELMET!!

This windshield was busted by a bike helmet. Thats bike HELMET, not cyclist's head.

I haven't been an outspoken helmet advocate before, and often left mine behind, but witnessing this changes everything.

This accident happened at 5:30pm yesterday at Armitage and Humboldt Blvd. Sun glare hit the driver as he was turning, did not see the cyclist at all. He pulled out from a full stop at the light to make a left turn. The impact happened at no more than 10 miles an hour. Cyclist was broadsided by car, thrown onto hood and windshield. Cyclist's head was whipped onto the glass (see perfect helmet indentation in glass). Cyclist was then thrown back forward as the car was still moving and attached to the bike as the bike also attached to the car started to get dragged under. Cyclist lands under bike on street, car stops.

All this happened in mere seconds, and at a low speed, yet the injury that could have been sustained is obvious if not for the helmet.

I say 50% helmet, 50% Mandy watching over the intersection. Glad you're OK, or whoever the cyclist was.

Wow! That sounds pretty crazy. Glad I wear my helmet!

Thanks! My backpack was full of clothes and cushioned the impact.
Heck yeah Amber... when I heard "Amber K got hit" over at h'bar last night I immediately wondered if it was you, and when it was confirmed.... Well, you know the rest. I'm really glad you're doing all right!

Wow.. Thank goodness you're ok! Let's hope for no more ghost bikes any time soon.

Here's a similar photo. Except the cyclist wasn't wearing a helmet and broke the windshield with his head. He died a few hours later. (I represented the family in a suit brought against the driver.) I am sorry to be so grim, but wear a helmet. Please!
