i know you said not boots, but these...climbed up mt marcy in NY, climbed down grand canyon, and worn everyday through the winter. perfect when paired with a wool sock. will keep you warm and dry

IGGI - Thanks for the pic, those boots look pretty durable. Good to know that they stand up to the elements.

I wore an old pair of shoes that had an extra leather strap over the front, they held up pretty well last winter, but I am hoping to make the upgrade this year.

I swear by big 'ol boots and big 'ol BMX pedals. Tried other stuff, but the Army issued Alaska boots always serve good duty (hee hee, I said duty . . .)

NEOS overshoes are hard to beat for really foul weather. They are kind of big and clunky, about as awkward as wearing a boot. But they go on and off quite easy, much better than any other overshoe I've tried and they pack down and can be stuffed in a pannier or bag much easier than carrying around a separate pair of boots.

Yeah, I have a pair of NEOS and they are great. A little silly looking but totally worth it. They keep you warm and dry!

Hey, had the same problem 2 winters ago and stumbled across BOGS or BOGGS made for fishing and stuff they breath well and are super tough. Come in both boot and shoe, love the shoe my self. No laces just slide on and off. Shoes.com has em and zappos.com I think as well. Think I paid like $20 with shipping so very worth the cash. Hope this helps out.

Merrell makes some pretty nice gore tex shoes: http://www.merrell.com/US/en-us/Gallery.mvc.aspx/M-F/Gender-Gallery....

They definitely have a cross-training / hiking look to them, but so does almost anything that is waterproof. I have owned a few pairs for hiking, and they work very very well while also lasting far longer thna other shoes. I would say any shoe you can find treated with gore tex is probably going to hold up well in wet weather. In my opinion, though, even allegedly "waterproof" items will get soaked if you are riding in a complete downpour for long enough.

Seal skinz socks are also another option: http://www.sealskinz.com. Mixed with a gore tex shoe, it think it would take one hell of a storm for water to reach actual skin.

I say go for the overshoes. And yes, NEOS are great! Or, if you are looking for cheap, basic overshoes you can also check at the Army/navy surplus store.

I wear these in the fall (or Neos) and change over into my winter hiking boots for temps below 30 degree down to temps of -40.
