Please let me know if this is a duplicate thread and I'll close this one... a few recent experiences have left me thinking it would be good to keep a video log of my ride.
Who's got experience with these and what can you recommend?

I know I'm replying to an over 4 year old post, but I got a chuckle when I saw the caveat that "it may suck."
I bought one of these cameras around that time and it did indeed suck..big time. It worked for, at best, about an hour before it froze up while recording. Couldn't turn it off or anything. I had to wait for the battery to run down to try charging it up to see if it would work. It never did come back on. Thankfully, Menard's has always been good with returns and I was able to get my money back.
Moral of the story? Yep, you guessed it...you get what you pay for (my ex-wife's favorite saying LOL!!).
:~)
I saw a guy riding in with a helmet cam today. I really dig that cyclists are using these more and more. There is nothing more powerful than video. Everyone believes the video.
This new device looks interesting. It uses sensors for your heart rate, an accelerometer for sudden stops or swerves and a gps sensor to automatically cut away all the mundane stuff from your ride video and keep just the extraordinary stuff (the almost-dooring when your heart skips a beat, your swerve around the car parked in the bike lane, etc.). As a former video editor, I'm kinda sorry artificial intelligence is beginning to take over video editing, but, hey, welcome to the 21st Century.
This product looks really interesting and not outrageously expensive either. In the video, the demonstrator mentioned that it will save recordings into the cloud. I've pre-ordered this product which I've been promised should be shipping by November.
So now that you've increased my anticipation for the next whiz bang video recording product, I stumbled across this sobering article.
My bad for bringing this back to life. But I am also looking to "invest" in a camera. I had my bike for 3 days when I was hit and now that I am better, I will soon start to embark on a 15 mile one way commute to/from work.
While GoPro seems to be the "industry standard" I'm not sure they are in my price range. Do all action cameras upload to the cloud? Is front facing (helmet) and rear facing (taillight) ideal?

Gitup does a very nice GoPro knockoff. I have a Git 2 and have been quite pleased with it. The cool thing about their new camera is that it will have available a rear-facing module that can shoot video at the same time as the main camera shoots in front (or vice-versa). You end up with two separate videos, one front-facing, one rear. A pretty cool innovation that about covers it all.
I use a Fly6 on the rear of my bike: http://cycliq.com/products/fly6/. Pretty good images and battery life, and an additional rear light never hurts.
I'm still looking for a forward facing camera that i like and that fits my budget. I had a Polaroid Cube, which was great in terms of images, but the magnetic mount sucks on Chicago roads/paths and it went flying off one day. :-(
