It's my long term goal to move to the city. It's not a good time to sell my current house and move though. There are schooling options outside of DPS between the private and charter schools. An expert once noted that few public schools in large urban districts are very good.

I guess it all just looks really bad on the news and for people on the outside. I just love finding the beauty in the breakdown.
So Todd are you moving into the city? Thats a great idea.for single folks without kids but its extremely hard to raise kids in the city. Mostly because of the schools and transportation. We do need more empty nesters to move into the city and help that tax base though.

Yes, I just blogged about Leadville at http://www.allyeargear.com/2009/strains-pains-and-belt-buckles/

My feet haven't fit inside shoes for a week so I'm not riding yet.

I disagree with Andy about Detroit though. I'll defer to the well written piece on the Powerhouse Design Project web site. Oh, and yes the Lions suck, but the Tigers and Red Wings still rock.

Hey Todd! How was Leadville? Did you blog about it yet? Gimme a link! You need to ride with me!

Beat the Train is the Saturday ride we do. Beatthetrain.com. Anyway, how long have you lived in Chicago? Did you graduate from HS here?
Here is my nutshell take on Detroit from a lifer. From a lot of angles it just plain SUCKS! Its got a ton of problems that have unforseeable solutions. The school system is only now begining to restructure after decades and decades corruption. Mayor Dave Bing (former Piston) has made serious cuts and lay offs to try and shrink the budget deficit Crime and blight at an all time high. We have the worst NFL team in the league. So with all that it takes a VERY special person to find the positives within that atmosphere. This person should be able to look past the negatives and see the diamond in the rough. Who wants to be comfortable? Where is the adventure in that? Life is for living on the edge and in a ton of ways nobody knows this better then the average Joe in Detroit. Now I'm not just talking about the city for characters. The whole metro area is loaded with people with that enthusiam. All in all its a unique place to live and I've just never been able to live anywhere else. I'm fine with that.

Yea, car insurance is quite high within the city and tends to compound when your record is less then spotless. Aaron, maybe I missed this but are you from Detroit originally? We had a cool BTT Ride this morning. Dry and cool and the sun is coming up later so we're getting some great views.

better not have a car since insurance in tha D is double what it is in Chicago!

I know a guy who owns a bar and a loft downtown and he uses the PM and owns no car. No car bills either.
