Ride of Silence - May 18, 2016 - One day. One time. World wide.

Join the annual Ride of Silence, an organized annual cycling procession honoring those that have been injured or killed. The goal is to raise awareness that we are here, and to ask that we all share the road.

Save the date for the 2017 Chicago Ride Of Silence - May 17, 2017

Our route typically passes several Ghost Bikes, which are powerful memorials to fallen cyclists created by painting a bicycle white and placing it at or near the site of the cyclist’s death.

WHERE: Hundreds of locations world wide; Eternal Flame (Daley Plaza) in Chicago

Communities throughout Chicagoland participate in the Ride of Silence including: Arlington Heights, Bartlett, Elk Grove Village, Evanston, Joliet, Oak Park and Peoria.

Comment by Bob Kastigar on May 19, 2011 at 8:46pm: I agree, Todd - I think the ride was a little fast paced, especially on some of the long stretches of straight-line streets.

Comment by Todd Allen on May 19, 2011 at 8:30pm: Excellent ride. It was clear a lot of thought and effort went into organizing and making the map, etc.

I would suggest though either a slower pace by the ride leaders or more frequent stops to regroup. When I was toward the back the ride was getting quite strung out. The ride got split at the first crossing of Western and bike cops went out into traffic against the light to interrupt the traffic to allow the back group to proceed through and rejoin the front group.

Also, there were times where I might have passed out flyers had the pace been slower, but I wasn't always comfortable stopping or slowing to do so.

Thanks to Elizabeth for another great job and unfathomable unseen preparation on top of a full time job and other obligations.

I’m glad that I did the ride, for so many reasons. So many reasons that are impossible to convey here. Life is short. Way to f-ing short."

I think so many still stay away from this ride in Chicago because of the somber note attached to it. But it's not somber.... as Brent Cohrs said in his blog, "Silence is sobering."

I know it's a wake-up call for me each year. And - a very touching reminder of just how tight our bike community is. We are never alone. Thanks for riding with us.

Comment by David Barish on May 19, 2011 at 10:32am: 13 riders in Evanston. Short on numbers long on signficance. It was a very moving event for those of us who ignored the warning of weather and the siren of basketball. A report was submitted to the ROS page.
