The chat in the comments section about seat posts got me thinking of resources I use that people haven't heard about.

All the types and shapes on metal you can think of. Growing every day and now have a midwest distrobution place. Order special cuts, any size, they start charging for cuts after the first 2.

mcmaster carr
Chicago Based company that had almost anything fabrication related, in a great website. I get hard to find hardware and do "whats out there" searches. Also, if you order early in the day they will messenger it out same day - that was like the twilight zone.

Best prices for chromoly tubing:

Dillsburg Aeroplane Works (Charles T. Vogelsong).
(no website): Phone (717) 432-4589
Dillsburg, PA

Note, Charlie can be cranky if you don't know exactly what you want and doesn't have a catalog or pricelist. You need to be prepared with OD and wall thickness and lengths. I think you can get pieces up to 7' shipped at typical parcel rates (the length of my trailer...) but for longer pieces you'll need it truck shipped which I think starts at about $200 per shipment.

Here's a site with an extensive list of chromoly tubing sizes, including weight. Go here to figure out what you want and to see typical pricing and then call Charlie and you'll probably save 50% or more.

I am contemplating getting a truck shipment this spring as I need some 12' lengths for a project and I'd rather not have to join up shorter pieces. Message me if you want to order from here and share shipping costs.
