I've done a 6-day, 400-mile tour of Southern California on a rented bike, but now I'm planning something more ambitious: 850 miles from Chicago to DC over 11 days. I'm doing it next month to raise awareness and money for multiple system atrophy, a rare neurological disease that killed my dad. I'd like to do it on a road bike with SAG, but I'm not sure I can get a driver. The logistics are starting to overwhelm, because I'm looking for sponsors and inviting others to ride the first and last days.
It would be great to get sponsors for SAG, lodging, nutrition/hydration, jerseys and other cycling gear. (I do have commitments for water and peanut butter, so that's a start.) I guess this group is more for advice on touring. I have an event page at http://www.thechainlink.org/events/make-your-mark-msa-awareness-tou... and a web site at http://msatour.net. Thoughts?
There's a great event coming up for touring and travel - a workshop being put on by BFF Bikes:

Awesome Bob! New Orleans is really nice these days. Don't miss it! :-)
I've been around Lake Michigan - twice. It's a great bicycle trip and a great route all the way around.
For 2014, I'm thinking of a trip: train to Jackson MS, bike to Ocean Springs (to visit my sister), bike to New Orleans, then train back to Chicago. I've been south many times, but usually through Louisiana.I'd hate to miss Louisiana, but one part of this trip is a long trail, the Longleaf Trace.
Probably early May, before it gets too hot.
You may have seen me on Jan 24th, an all seasons Chicago commuter, a randonneur, but more importantly a multi day touring cyclist. Have completed Lake Michigan, Chile, Paris, Portland/Seattle/Victoria BC and recently Lake Erie and plenty of smaller 4 day weekend get aways. Looking forward to tours around Lake Ontario 2015, Lake Huron and Lake Superior (but does not have to be in that order) and other foreign countries (years in between). Look forward to the chat on this list between touring cyclists. Anyone interested in joint planning a tour, specifically the great lakes, let me know.
PS: 2014 - no plans yet, maybe Denver mountain trip.
PS: for great distance and hill training training, come up to Delavan, WI, Great Lakes Randonneurs at www.glrrando.org
Great article in the NY Times on bicycle travel. (It's a pay-for site, so I hope this link works.

For many cyclists, riding a bike is a kind of heaven. You’re simply a body breathing clean air and having very few thoughts. That’s the meditative side. It does not hurt that the sport is kind to the knees. That’s the non-load-bearing, exertive side. Then there are the fans who like to mosey, the leisurely bike riders. No spandex or clocking speed for them. They don’t pay attention to the miles. It’s just the wind in their faces, and the tranquillity and peace that they feel. With the advent of fall, three writers tell us about their favorite bike journeys, from a beloved route along rolling fields and Lake Champlain in Vermont and upstate New York to a ride in the wild green countryside of western Ireland and a night ride in Paris.
Amtrak is currently having a promotion for the Pere Marquette train between Chicago and Grand Rapids.
However, this route doesn't accept carry on bicycles like the three routes in Illinois and the one route across Missouri.
Contact Amtrak and complain.
Of interest to the touring kinds!

Join Active Trans and connect with riders of all levels that have at least one common interest – seeing the world by bike!
Active Trans Board President, Jim Kreps will share his tips and tricks on bike touring both domestic and international.
In addition, Climate Ride will give a presentation about their long distance cycling events that have risen over $1 million for bicycle advocacy, sustainability, clean energy, and climate education/advocacy organizations. Climate Ride currently produces two events—a New York City to Washington, DC ride and Fortuna to San Francisco, CA—and are working toward bringing an event to the midwest as well. The presentation will share Climate Ride's transformative experience and cover logistics for training, travel, and fundraising.
Past riders will be on hand to answer questions as well!

We still have room for 2 more at our campsite. If you interested and don't have the equipment, I can scrounge up a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad. You'll have to figure out how to carry it and bring your own food. Email me at sdgoodwine@gmail.com tonight, I will check until 11pm.
