Riding? Several trails in the general direction.

Travel? Amtrak between La Crosse and Chicago. Both handle checked luggage, Madison doesn't. Rt. 28, leaves about 10:45 AM. See www.amtrak.com

The weather is supposed to be beautiful this weekend and i'm thinking about trying my first bike camping adventure.

Chain O' Lakes State Park is about 60 miles from downtown Chicago. It's in a beautiful green part of the state and they have a camp ground and boat rental.

I'm going to metra it up friday mid day and ride back on Sunday if anyone wants to give it a try.

Apparently, "s24o" (Sub 24 hour Overnight) is the hot new internet meme to describe going on a one-overnight bike tour. Witness http://s24o.com, for example.

I would love to go on weekend camping tour somewhere nearby this summer. I've done a few shorter local trips by myself in the previous years and a longer monthlong trip down in Baja with 2 other guys. I have about 3 weeks of vacation left this year as well, so I wouldn't mind doing a longer tour if people are interested.

I have had good luck with the Eagle Nest hammock with rainfly. Uncle Dan's and Erehwon both carry it.

I highly recommend getting the Eagle Nest tree straps. I have strung up the hammock by moonlight with these things with no problem. For cold weather I roll up in a wool army surplus blanket. The hammock and fly go into self contained bags with straps that I hook on to the back of my rack. It takes up minimal space.

Anyone have any suggestions of a good, covered camping hammock that won't break the bank?

Be sure and check that "Closure" page - some of the state park facilities are CLOSED because of budget problems.

Like Illini - which is on the way to Starved Rock

Thanks payton, that DNR list is great.

this handy DNR list says that Chain O' Lakes and Kankakee River state parks have cabins. I know that COL is just a few miles past Metra's Fox Lake terminal, and it has -- get this -- hills. (Looked at it as a launching point for a Wisconsin tour last year.)
