Will...I'd be up for an group overnight tour this spring. I'm itching to get out again.

Any idea of destination?

Anyone planning an overnight tour this spring or summer? I'm interested but lost my touring partner, and would like to go with a group of some sort.

Grand Illinois Trail, in the summer of 2006:

The League of Illinois Bicyclists publishes a Grand Illinois Trail guide and maps. According to them it is a 535 mile loop with 200 of that road. I've ridden several portions of it with the annual GITAP ride. The portions I've ridden have been nice - both road and trail. Lack of funding had some of the trails (like portions of I&M canal) in not so good shape this year. Here is the guide:

I was trying to ride the Great Allegheny Passage before it got too cold but they've already had snow on remote portions of the trail so I'll wait until next season. Originally, I'd planned to ride east from Pittsburgh. If I don't have enough time to do the entire 300+ mi. ride, I'll fly to BWI, Amtrak it west then take a shuttle to one of the most scenic and remote sections and ride out.

Has any one biked the Grand IL Trail? Thinking of a spring break tour via the GIT. whats the best maps to use and how much is trail to road?

A 132-mile trail from McKeesport, Pa., to Cumberland, Md., is part history lesson, part nature excursion and part fun house, with thrilling and spooky moments.

I'm considering a trip from Pittsburgh to Washington next summer, and this is 1/2 of the trip.

We did the ride to Two Brothers in Warrenville. We started from Madison/Washington in West Loop and jogged over to the IPP at 1st Ave. The IPP was great, not bad at all for road or touring tires. The first part of the IPP does currently have quite a few intersections with roads that are under construction, and though it was nice, there are a lot of intersections in general.

Once we got to Warrenville (via the Aurora branch of the IPP) we got off at Butterfield Rd., which was fairly miserable due to rain, high-speed traffic, and a narrow shoulder. But we were only on that for a couple of miles before reaching Two Brothers.

Starting from 1st Avenue the IPP is paved. But even when it turns to gravel it really isn't very bad. I've ridden it several times with a thin-tired road bike.

For a route to Warrenville, it's not a bad choice. If you're coming from Chicago you can ride the Blue Line to the terminal, which is only about a mile or so from the start of the path.

Not that it's a particularly long ride, but does anyone know of a good route to Warrenville? Some friends and I are wanting to take a tour of the Two Brothers brewery there. I thought the IPP would be perfect, until I discovered it's mostly gravel. Any ideas?
