Great trip; summers got a long way to go so make this trip if you get a chance.

Re: Jamis Aurora Elite v. Surly LHT, you can't go wrong either way. I got a Cannondale Touring 1 on clearance for basically the same price as the Aurora Elite.

But honestly, touring bikes were all the rage in the 1970's and 1980's, and there are so many touring bikes to be had from that era. If I had to do it all again, I would definitely have looked for a vintage touring bike.

In fact, I just picked up a Fuji Saratoga touring bike in (nearly) perfect NOS condition for $150. I'm putting new rubber, stem, and moustache handlebars on it and am going to use it as a city/commuter for a while. It has bar-end shifters and a 7-speed (7x3) Suntour drivetrain, and a triple-butted lugged frame.

I'm planning a weekn long tour for the first week of August. I'm flexible with area to tour, but would want to do something generally local and do either a circle or take the amtrak to starting/ending locations.

My first thoughts were along the Mississippi in Western Illinois or to do a circle around/along Michigan's Manistee forest and Western Coast.

Let me know if you are interested.

I've got a seasonal job, mostly on the weekends. So I end up with most of the week to dream about longer rides. Is anybody else in a similar boat? Yes? Let's go to Wisconsin!

I'm thinking about getting a touring bike. I've done some 25ish mile rides on my Sirrus Sport, and I think I'd like something better suited to longer rides. I'm seriously considering the Jamis Aurora Elite and a Surly Long Haul Trucker. By the time you add a rack & fenders, and upgrade the brakes and swap shifters they would basically be the same price. Any thoughts?

Registration is open for America's largest fund-raiser for tree research, the 2010 STIHL Tour des Trees, which this year starts in Chicago.

The weeklong cycling event starts July 18 in Millennium Park, travels to Iowa and loops back to the Morton Arboretum.

The registration fee is $100 until June 1; $125 after. To participate, riders must raise at least $3,500 for tree research.

The IDOT bike maps are only displayed with Internet Explorer; I don't think Firefox or another browser will work.

Speaking of. It seems that the IDOT bicycle maps are broken. Are the county maps basically the same?
