Safe Bicycle Route, Chicago to Springfield?

On google maps it looks like a frontage road most of the way next to route 55. This diagonal route, if safe, would beat the mileage off of zigzagging on north/south-east/west country roads.

 

Does anyone have experience in riding to Springfield?  Thanks!
