I'm not working next Saturday.

Who's in?

How have folks been feeling about the times they've been getting down there?

I once heard that thieves will try to catch vendors while they're lined up to enter to unload their stolen bikes, so I really feel like getting there early gives the greatest return on investment.

Should we plan to meet there at 8, with people arriving earlier as they see fit?

Is there value in having one large group assembled?

Remember to note whether you're in for Saturday, but let's have some back and forth to see how we can refine our approach.

Ill prob just meet everyone down there again. My 'loaner bike' (stupid theives) won't let me keep up with you guys for that distance.
You obviously have not payed attention to how slow I ride...

would we present ourselves at the council as a 'vigilante' group or just bring our findings to their attention? do you think we would be telling them something they dont already know, or is it more to say that WE know, too?

Will go through and summarize for Saturday later in the week.

A suggestion from a well respected bike advocate in regard specifically to Swap-O-Rama-- attend a Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Council meeting and bring it to the city's attention.

Thoughts?
You do ride slow . . .

What began as an ad hoc collection of individuals now has a name, its own chainlink sub-group, and over 20 self-identified members. Efforts have been undertaken to establish a protocol and identify tasks. Notwithstanding my inherent suspicion of group behavior, it seems to me that there are a number of different identified objectives for this group:

-Eliminate or reduce Bike Theft;
-Capture Bike Thieves;
-Photograph Bike Thieves;
-Capture “known” vendors of stolen bicycles;
-Photograph “known” vendors of stolen bicycles;
-Alert the authorities (police, alderman, Bicycle Advisory Council and/or City Council) to market(s) trafficking in stolen bicycles; and
-Recover stolen bicycles.

I believe each of these objectives has some merit, but also believe that some of these objectives are mutually exclusive.

Do we also need to refine objectives?

vig·i·lan·te
1. One who takes or advocates the taking of law enforcement into one's own hands.
2. A member of a vigilance committee.

It is a group of vigilantes and there is nothing wrong with that. ;-)

Good luck tomorrow and hope to see everyone at naked ride to get a full report! ;-)
If I make it there I will have a lap top.
1152 N Milwaukee Ave. I've got a small laptop. Carene can hold down at Mickey's. Be there, Or Be square
Do you guys need an extra u lock? Let me know if you would need one (I know there are varying opinions on simply trying to quickly throw a ulock around a bike before the cops arrive). I can't come Saturday but can donate one (hopefully I will get it back but if not its a donation).

Also, other Saturdays I can come, sounds like it would be good to get fresh faces so as not to spook vendors who start to know some of you.
I know it was the functional equivalent of pissing in the ocean, but that was fun. Thanks everyone.
So what happened?
You can move this to a closed group if you like. Thieves and fences "fighting back" is completely unacceptable, and if they want to move from theft of property to larger crimes, then I think a line definitely has to be drawn.
