Information

Chicagoland Beer Exploration Society

Every member of the Society (CBES) should aspire to have a beer at every brewery or brewpub located in a day or two bicycle ride distance from Chicago (and, of course, within the city limits).

Naturally, preferable way of getting to is by bike, as for riding back . . . whatever is available, train, bus, horse and buggy, depending on amount of beverages consumed at the destination.

Have other weekend plans but if anyone's interested and able, I'm leaving Uptown tomorrow Fri. ~1:30pm for a quick stop at Bulldog Brewing in Whiting, IN -50 mi. roundtrip.  Back home by 6pm-ish.

Milwaukee, anyone?  Last southbound train departs Milwaukee at 7:35p.  Advance reservations required for bikes, also desirable to get cheaper fares.

Walk-Up Checked Bike Service Offered Aboard the Hiawatha Service

Effective May 2, 2016

Amtrak and the Wisconsin and Illinois departments of transportation now offer Walk-up Checked Bike Service aboard the Hiawatha Service at the Chicago and Milwaukee stations for only $5.

Reservations Required

Bicycle reservations are required and travel documents for bikes must be presented to the conductor when boarding the train. Passengers can reserve space for their bikes by selecting "add bike" when they book their train travel on Amtrak.com, by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) and at Amtrak ticket offices. Passengers can also make reservations at the Chicago and Milwaukee QuikTrak ticketing kiosks. Bike reservations cannot be made through Amtrak mobile apps. Only one bike is permitted per person.

Passengers must complete a baggage ID tag and attach it to their bike. Passengers boarding at the Chicago and Milwaukee stations can obtain baggage ID tags at the ticket office. Passengers must present a photo ID when retrieving their bike.

Arrive Early

Passengers checking bikes must arrive 30 minutes prior to train departure to allow sufficient time to obtain their ticket and baggage tag, and to get their bike to the baggage car.

Eligible Bikes

Only standard size bikes will be permitted. Large seat/saddle bags must be removed from the bikes. These items can be carried on the train and will count as a carry-on item.
