Looking at a few pictures online it looks to me like the front wheel is laced three cross on both sides - hard to tell, though, without an actual wheel to look at?

Thanks for the advice Owen. I'm going to stay with the steel wheel, as all three of my Raleigh Sports have very nice 36 spoke steel wheels. I try to never take them out in the rain, so braking isn't a big issue. I do have two Sprites that I have converted to alloy rims. I'd like for the lacing pattern to be as they came from Raleigh (Sturmey Archer) with. When I get all the parts I'll measure the ERD and other pertinent dimensions and publish it in this space.

For a 26" wheel, two or three cross will work. Probably easier to do a two cross though. Not sure what they came with originally, a two cross on the large flange side makes a lot of sense.
I would recommend that if you are going to the trouble of building the wheel, a modern 26 x 1 3/8" rim might be worth it. Lighter weight and better braking surface, and not too expensive, about $40 or so.

OK, let me clarify what I really want to know. On a 36 hole Sturmey Archer Dynohub wheel what was the lacing pattern as it came from the factory. I beleive that it was cross 2 on the large flange side and cross 3 on the small flange side. Can anyone confirm this?

ERD is easy to measure and the lacing pattern is whatever you choose it to be.

Need help/advice. Just bought a 36 hole Sturmey Archer Dynohub and a good used rim (26 x 1 3/8) to lace it into. If you've ever laced an S/A Dynohub into a Westrick steel rim give me a shout. I'd like to know the lacing pattern of the large flange vs the small flange. Also, if you already know the ERD it would save me the trouble.
