Crank arms can be rebent.
I rebent the arm on my '54 at least 12-15 degrees back. It wasn't caught by a curb or anythign while riding but was backed into while stored in the garage. Getting squished between the bumper and the solid wall of the garage will bend something. You might want to eyeball your frame really well. Mine was only slightly bent which amazes me since the crank bent so much. It must have been a clean push against the wall to bend the crank like that but not the frame very bad.
I had to heat it up to bend it back, enough to scorch the chrome a bit. I was careful to heat it up slowly and let it cool down slowly so as not to get the crank too brittle/hard. So far it has held up fine except for the pretty rainbow of color on the chrome.
Thanks, Mike. i'm planning on it, but there are a couple of teething troubles to resolve. The right Brampton pedal has a bent spindle (i found NOS replacement spindles), but when i swapped the pedal out and set up i saw that the right crankarm was also slightly twisted. Seems a previous rider must've caught the pedal on some immovable object whilst moving at speed. Bet that hurt. i have a Raleigh crankarm to install as a temporary replacement.
i also rebuilt the wheels with Sun CR18 EA3 rims and found a shiny newer set of Phillips mudguards. i'm planning to have the original Phillips mudguards rechromed at some point and install them on the Phillips frame i just got.
Anyone out there have a Bayliss, Williams, or Brampton 48T crankset to spare?
Luuv-e-ly sighting Miss Katie. The young lady, RidingPretty, certainly has a thing for Tweed Rides. Check out her compendium of sartorial cycling here!
The McHenry bike won't be popping up on Craigslist any more.
I took the afternoon to drive up and get it. It'll need a complete disassembly/rework to get on the road.
The vinyl-covered Brooks mattress saddle is a bit torn and tattered but everything else short of the brake inner cables and pads can be re-used. The rear cog is even a 20t and the chain is a go according to my park chain gauge. The tires are salvageable but not new. Maybe a flashy set of cream Schwalbe's will pay for themselves on resale but the money would be better spent on new alloy rims.
I'll have to think on that. Perhaps one of those nice plaid seat covers and a basket would make it a bonny buy come this spring for the lassies after I perform a complete service.
