If you'd have decimalised sooner The Empire might have survived.

What do you think it used to do to us, then, when we had to buy & sell with it or - worse still - do sums with it?

Don't speak to me in old money, it gives me a headache.

In old fashioned Brit-speak we'd often use "two ha'peth", from half-pence, so this would actually only amount to a penny? And, by my calculations, that would be close to two cents worth: 1 dollar = 5 bob = 5 shillings = 48 pence!    :-)

My 2 pence worth on Tweed Rides.  I like a good 'fancy dress' bike ride but I do wish photographers posting pictures of these would emphasize the bikes as much as the riders.  So far while perusing pictures of The London Tweed Run I've yet to see many interesting vintage bikes.  A good start would be to caption pictures with something like "Here's John S. and his 1956 Holdsworth." I'll back this up by doing just that for the next BBC ride.

I have no problem with safety gear.

But I have an issue with it being REQUIRED. As far as I know there are no laws against anyone who wishes to using any particular gear. Should an individual choose to employ any/all that is commercially available for bicycle use they should be allowed to wear it. I would tenaciously fight against any such law banning helmets/gear.

Wearing safety gear should be a Right -not a requirement.

As for shutting down LSD all day. I don't think we'll see that happen. There'd be a riot and angry motorists would be marching on city hall demanding that all bikes and riders be registered/licensed/taxed and be required show their birth certificates or prove their immigration status. It's probably not a good idea to push too far in that direction for fear of push-back.

But at least some of that safety gear may be advisable on our Tweed Rides, one gets a tad wobbly after the 4th or 5th bar - or, as on our last ride, before leaving the 1st bar and certainly in the 2nd bar!     :-)

One complaint I have about BTD is that you can cycle on it at or before dawn and shortly thereafter, but once motorised Chicagoans have finished their (late) breakfast and want to "hit the streets", we have to get off. I'd be far more impressed if it was closed all day Sunday!

You obviously didn't see my discussion in other forums here with the people running the BTD event a few weeks back ;)

I seem to have an issue with authority...

I will not be participating in the BTD event. I really don't have an issue paying money to ride an organized event. But once they put in a requirement like mandatory helmet use (something that isn't even required by law to ride the city streets) then they aren't getting any of my cash.

Leaderless events like CM are more my style. But since BTD is closing down LSD and needs official government approval and permits and stuff I guess that it needs more.

Where does the "safety cops" thing end? Helmets? Athletic cups? ANSI-approved cycling gloves? Knee-pads? ABS brakes? Air-bags? Mandatory bike inspections? No fixies without brakes? No tall bikes? Nobody allowed without passing some sort of advanced bicycle-riding course? Licenses? USAC race card? Let me zee your paperz?

I'll pass ;)
