So I just purchased an old Dawes bicycle. I'm not exactly sure what year or model it is. I got it with the idea of a great winter project, but not sure to even go about it. Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. I just can't seem to find a web site that has any parts.
I'll post a picture as soon as I can.

Working Bikes typically sells Raleigh 3-speeds for $150 - $200, depending on their condition - so this is towards the high end, but as it doesn't have a leather saddle it isn't at the very top.

All we have in it is a pair of (cheap) new tyres and the labo[u]r of overhauling it ...

That is discouraging Alan.   That bike should be selling for much more than that.   I have a few of my own refurbs that just aren't selling for what I have in them.  Seems like the Tweed fad is fading :(

Hey Nutters!  The weekend of 6 Oct looks like it's going to be a ripper for all things tweedy! Fellow Traveller Lee Diamond has been working with the BBC to host the 1st ever suburban architecture Tour of Oak Park!  As he writes over at the calendar:

I am proud to partner with the BBC (British Bicycles of Chicago) to bring you an architectural and historical bike tour of the Village of Oak Park, our first venture into the 'burbs, to be followed by one new suburb a year and the beginning of their rotation in the overall tour schedule.

 

With a population of over 50,000, it is one of the largest municipalities in the state. It is the perfect suburb for architecture fans. It boasts the largest concentration of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings anywhere in the world, as well as a stunning array of Prairie School buildings and wonderful Victorians from other architecture luminaries such as E. E. Roberts, Charles White Jr., John Van Bergen, Tallmadge and Watson, and George Maher. The village boasts one of the most densely packed tours we have ever offered. None of it would have been possible without the help of Garth Katner of the BBC and without our inspiration from Philander Barclay, a bike repair shop owner who cycled the city taking photographs of the buildings and people of Oak Park and River Forest. First he began collecting photos in the 1880s and by 1902 started taking his own pictures, many of which are now in the collection of the Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest. He is the perfect muse for this venture.

Just joined the BBC and wanted to say hello.  I'm the one who bought the ladies 1961 Raleigh Superbe that Alan noted on Craigslist 8 Aug. My path down this slightly dottie rabbit hole was started by Peter Jourdain of Whitewater (aka Wrongway Pete to some of you, or so he tells me). The Duchess, as my steed is now dubbed, is indeed in fine condition -- only a few frame scratches, functioning Dynohub lights and SA gears (beautiful heron chainring), original grips, original Brooks saddle and . . . original tyres (functioning but worrisome).  Does anyone know where I might find a pair of Michelin World Tours (26 x 1 3/8 gumwall, natch)? I've called around a bit; the warehouse itself seems to be out.  I'm hoping I can count on you folks for advice as I fit out the Duchess -- and myself -- for some 3 speed rides.  Are any of you planning to go to Peter's Rural Ramble in Wisconsin on 7 October?
