The Chainlink

(Sarcasm hopefully felt over the InterWeb....)

So the Farmer's Almanac has predicted that this is going to be a Hell of a winter. If December has been any indication, I fear that outlook may be correct. In fact, it's snowed like a MF'er in places typically not affected much by mean winter: Austin, new Orleans, and Portland to name a few.

Last winter almost robbed me of my sanity. If this is going to be worse, I SERIOUSLY don't know what I'm gonna do. Especially if the city keeps up it's innovative "do nothing" approach to clearing the streets of snow.

Sigh. 8 days to New Orleans....and it BETTER be warm there!!!

Rant over. :-)

Here's another bright side:

At least it's not face-stabbing freezing rain! :)

I found today to be an absolute blast. I work on my bike outside and it was manageable. The commute home was great. I had a handfull of people at random bus stops hold their hands out for high fives, thumbs up, smiles as I rode past. A lot smoother to ride farther to the right where the snow is fresh rather than in the paths of car tires.
That's freaking awesome, Kate! I don't know why I felt so intimidated by today's snowfall (I've ridden through conditions MUCH worse, too), but c'est la vie. Here's a "virtual" high-five right atcha!

I just got back, and I can't believe I made it. My boss' last words to me were "you're crazy..." Hey, maybe I am. But I just saved two bucks, and an extra hour!
Hoo-Boy! was it ever an adventure out there today. I Actually did not work today but I did have some errands to run. I could have blown them off but I figred, Hey it will be an adventure! So I saddled up and sallied forth. Talk about slipping and sliding and slewing! Like I said I didnt need to go out today but I just got these brand new all metal monster pedals with the stud grabby thingies on them and I had to try them out. I started at about six pm and my route took me from Humbolt park thru Wicker park and south to Hubbard then back up to Humbolt Park. At first I thought Damen would be the way to go, but it was clogged with cars, however I did get breif glimses of the bike lane. I discovered that Hubbard was completly clear! someone must have salted and plowed it on accident. Oakley from Hubbard to Agusta was pretty good, and free from traffic. and even Rockwell between Agusta and North wasnt too bad.
Apart from icicles forming on my beard. (isnt facial hair wonderfull this time of year?) it was actually a fairly pleasant experience. and I even got a "rock on!" followed by a fist pump from some guy on the street. And grim nodds of acknowlegement from other riders.
Awesome Cliff.

Isn't an icy beard the best? I had a good laugh when I looked at myself in the mirror once I finally got home.

And thanks for the road-condition update.

Reddog, how grippy are those pedals? What shoes were you wearing? thanks!

They are fairly grippy. Right now, during snow conditions, I wear my ten inch high "matterhorn" combat boots. They have thinsulate and Gore-tex and a kevlar safety toe. My last pair of them lasted nine years. They have a pretty serious tread on them so there are plenty of things for the studs to grab onto.
