Traffic 'round these parts dropped off pretty dramatically a few weeks ago... hard to tell from the "I rode today" thread who's still riding, as one would have to conclude that Gene is the only one out there most days by reading it....

Who's sticking it out and plans to continue to ride pretty much every day regardless of weather?

I'm still riding and plan to use Divvy this winter whenever things looks iffy weatherwise, or if there's slush that I wouldn't want to tackle with my own (thinner tire) bike or track into my living room with it.

Having said that, I did ride home yesterday afternoon unscathed but wimped out this morning and took the bus. Am undecided about this afternoon. Those Divvy bikes are heavy, and when there's a headwind on top of it, ugh.

Tim, this made me laugh in February and it's still funny today. This is now how I'm starting to feel about my Divvy fob, heckling me from my keychain.

The bike is mad I kept him out of the action by leaving him in the office over night. He's been heckling me all morning calling me frail, weak and delicate 'n stuff.

Wimped out last night but this morning was pretty much fine, a couple of slick spots getting to the LFT from Diversey. The curve at Oak Street all the way down to Illinois is still closed off (as of this morning), even though it's been salted and is fine to ride on, which is kind of annoying. I rode it anyway.

Biked all last winter; I shall bike all of this winter too :)

Although last winter I had lovely Milwaukee; this year my commute is Broadway-Clark-Wells and Dearborn-Clark-Broadway, so we'll see how that goes.  With slightly-snowy weather the other day, some sections seemed unsafe.

Ha, me too! I took my left hand off the bars to check if I was clear to turn into the alley right before my place and whoops! Sheeeeesh. I fell, but not too hard.

No problems today :)

I'm relieved to hear that I wasn't the only one who took a spill last night. I too made it within a mile of my place when I was claimed by the slick street. I re-mounted, noticing that my traction was still iffy, so I thought better of it and decided to walk the last mile. Yikes!

I'm so excited that it's cold enough to wear my goggles again! Luckily I worked from home yesterday -- just walking the dog was a death-defying act. This morning was fine, a few slick spots on Fulton near Odgen but nothing really bad.

Last year I did ok until I stopped riding for two weeks after Christmas. One week of taking the train/bus and I was spoiled/spooked. It was tough to get back to riding. For me, the key is to just keep going and not let the wind chill get to me.

Not that bad in the 'burbs. Colder than the city I think but less traffic and probably less dangerous ice. Did ride slow through the parks. Until today I found I was still too hot. Thermal shirt and wind breaker was sufficient. Still find my quads get cool but I will work it out. Most drivers are very polite but that may be because I give right of way.

Me, me.

Every winter since '05/'06 :)

Boy, it was cold this morning. I had 11 degrees F on my outdoor thermometer. A good balaclava works wonders.

Any recommendations on a good balaclava?

I'm using a Buff now, in combination with a fleece cycling cap, and I think I could do better. I'm mostly interested in avoiding chapped lips, so I guess I'm looking for something that I can cover my mouth with and still breath easily. Or, maybe some good non-drying chapstick...

Today I was wearing a Pearl Izumi one, with the word "Barrier" on the outside, FWIW. It's comfortable, fits under the helmet and when I breathe through my mouth my lips stay moist and my glasses don't fog. The panel which you breathe through is more porous than the rest of the thing so wind doesn't get through very much.

There was another kind which I liked better... it was made by Nike and was in their "Dri-Fit" line. The thing I liked about it was that it had two seams across the top of the head. All the other ones have a seam down the middle, which leaves a "Harry Potter"-like impression on my forehead. The Nike's seams were off to the sides, so that didn't happen. Nike makes lots of balaclavas, but I have been unable to find this particular one for several years.
