1986 fuji team america, columbus tubing, 54 cm, hand made hand painted, etc.


how would you build it up?
what components? why?

no .. sorry! you need a set of wheel to help with that.

as for the bike build it up to a suntour superb group .. no bottle cage's .why hide that amazing paint ..

"If you did want to restore it, you'd go with 6 speed Dura Ace SIS (down tube shifters of course). The Superbe Pro version had a 7 speed cluster. Everything else is easy enough to find: Nitto Pearl stem, Cinelli-bend Nitto drops, Dura Ace seatpost, Selle Italia Turbo saddle. And remember to use gum hoods on the brake levers! 126mm spaced rear wheels are plentiful and cheap."

Wowee! Looks nice. If you opt to go "retro", there are ample supplies of good old Dura-Ace/ST Superbe out there. I built up my baby with 20 year-old ST GPX/Cyclone stuff, and it works smoooothly. And I have a bike with an '89 Dura-Ace gruppo on it, and it shifts (as far as I can tell!) as well as the day it was made. These badass parts'll cost you a fraction of what it would be to build with modern parts.

This kind of budgeting will allow you to save the money for the chicks! ;-)

An '86 Team America doesn't exactly grow on trees so if it were me I would certainly be doing the full restoration with Dura Ace. Certainly one of Panasonics nicer paint schemes as well, I cringe to think of powdercoating one.

I have been after an '86 Team America since 1986 or so. During all those years I've only seen one in real life and maybe two or three others online. (One had been cut in half for a traveling bike... yikes)

In case you are wondering, I do in fact own an '86 Team America that I purchased from the original owner earlier this year. The web links to the gallery and catalog mentioned in earlier replies are all part of my site... I'm the guy that created the Panasonic Bicycles Virtual Museum. Naturally, I am therefore a bit biased when it comes to preserving some of the rarer models. ;-)

Looks like you would have a very nice builder there with a little TLC. Good luck!

i was thinking of a red deep v (machined sidewalls of course) in the back, and maybe a white one up front. but thats as far as i wanna go.

just noticed i called it a fuji in my original post, i must have been thnking about my 80something del rey while i was typing..

You could convert it, but I wouldn't. I'm thinking, you should look into Fusion rims. A nice substitute to the deep v's. You get the color, but the rims will be stronger, and a lot less hipster. Go with some gears. Classy it up a bit. Go with some classic drop bars. Nitto makes some nice ones. I mean, really! Down tube shifters and all! And this is coming from the fixie rider. Every bike doesn't need to be a fix or single speed.
