Interesting . . .

". . . it might be useful to have a copy of your local traffic laws on hand as a reference source . . ."

Does such compendium of bike-related Chicago and Illinois laws and regulations in a handy pocket-size format exist? If not, may be it should? (I can volunteer as a  typesetter . . . :)

Cards summarizing the bicycle related laws in Illinois are available from the League of Illinois Bicyclists ( http://bikelib.org ) You can also print your own from a .pdf file on the LIB website:

This is a very good article and demonstrates an excellent understanding of how police think and operate.
The LIB cards are a great resource, but I'd use them only as suggested in the linked article.
Never talk to cops

The only things you should say to a cop are:

Am I free to go?
No, I do not submit to an illegal search.
I exercise my right to remain silent and would like to speak to my lawyer.
No, I am not resisting.
Please don't taze me bro -ow, OW OOOOOOOWWWWW AAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!!

(hopefully they just pulled the tazer and not the gun by mistake...)
Down in La grange, I hear they got a lotta nice girls down there...

One La Grange policeman equals three Chicago cops? Interesting :)

That goes triple for cops in La Grange, IL.

1 La Grange cop is quite likely equal to the entire Chicago police force.
