The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

Dang! that was a fast response!

Hello,

I found your email address on the contact us page of UniFirst.

Please let your drivers know not to do deliveries on the bike lane in Chicago - there are appropriate loading zones - just not the bike lane, makes bike commuters have to move over to the other lanes, which is quite dangerous in rush hour.

This was taken this morning about 8:30am from the camera attached to the bike.

Kind regards,

Ernesto

Response:

Ernesto,

Thank you for bringing this important matter to our attention. UniFirst has built its business and its positive reputation by delivering excellence in customer service, and always taking “safety” and “courtesy” as priority one when doing so. In this case, it appears one of our Route Sales Representatives (delivery staff) may have fallen short of our expectations, and I can assure that you we take this kind of information very seriously. As such, I will be personally escalating this matter to the executive level at UniFirst for immediate attention and follow-up.

Please accept my apologies on behalf of UniFirst and understand that we do not and will never condone (or allow for) such driving practices by our staff.

Sincerely,

Nice!

If only other companies/entities (looking at you FedEx, restaurant suppliers, USPS especially) responded with even half the courtesy and speed.

Okay, not really the bike lane, but...I keep my bike in our garage, accessible via an alley. Well...I couldn't get into the alley because of this (had to take a long way around):

Roosevelt and Wabash, always chaotic during rush hour.

Van full of police blocking the bike lane.

Friday morning bike lane shenanigans on Dearborn heading north... Would be nice if the bike lane here was repainted.

323 W Illinois St. 311 report submitted. It's bad enough to park in a bike lane, but to do it when there is plenty of room at the curb is a real sin. To do it in front of a church is a mortal sin.
