Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

A 2'fer - bike lane and sidewalk!

Another 2'fer - bike lane and sidewalk!

On 1/25/2017 there was a stretched limo in the bike lane at Noble and Augusta (along with dozens of parents picking up their little darlings.  I told the limo driver that he was in the bike lane, he gave me the hand signal to "brush off".  I stopped and took out a pen and notebook and wrote down his plate and then he rolled down his window and told me to "F off".  I called police and later filed a formal compliant.

The school at Noble and Augusta has not been effective in getting parents not to park in the bike lane; they have not responded to my email letter of 1/25/2017.  Frequently, parents block Augusta all the way back to the highway exit ramp creating a pedX disaster.  I have written several times to alderman/person.

I think a limo driver would be a really easy one to deal with.

a) talking to the driver nicely, which you did
b) talking to their customers which may be nearby--the limo is supposed to be all fancy, if parking in bike lanes becomes makes the driver look bad...
c) calling the police, making a scene. The customers will feel just a little awkward when police with lights flashing (potentially) pull up and are ticketing their driver.

d) filing the complaint is a great idea! I often do this with commercial vehicles I see running red lights, on their cell phones, etc.

I tried to work this out without publicly shaming a business, yet here I am.

Two cars in the bike lane in front of Auto Boutique of Chicago 4249 N. Elston.  I called the business while I was out front and asked them to move their cars since it is an unsafe situation.  The employee sounded unconvinced that there were cars in the bike lane so I told him I would call the police if they were not moved.

When I saw one of the cars moving, I continued on my way home.  The car then followed me, rolled down his window and called out my first name, then turned off when I acknowledged.  That felt creepy. When I got home, I realized that I had a missed call from Auto Boutique but they did not leave a message.  My first name is on my voicemail greeting.  Very creepy.

I emailed Zak Madigan the owner about the situation.  He replied that they were not his cars, and that he moved them himself, and that it must have been a friend of mine menacing me out the car window.  I wrote back, called him on his lie and told him that I will report his frequent use of the bike lane to the police.

Anyone else in the area... would you be able to report this business any time you see him parked in the bike lane.  Don't call him though!

If you call, just use hit *67  before the phone number and it will block them from seeing it.

Yeah, that's really weird that the owner of a business would harass you like that.

That's on my commute so happy to call in any bike lane violations I encounter. Sorry you had such a creepy experience.

That's classic.

Canal in front of Northern Trust continues to be a recurring problem.  I haven't seen the food truck lately, but the NT shuttle driver continues to park in the lane instead of the designated bus stop.  This morning, he was parked on a 30 degree angle across both the stop and the lane.  In the past, I've complained directly to Northern Trust people on site, which would get him to stop for a little while but invariably return.  311 hasn't done anything.
