The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

In addition to the fine provided in Section 9-4-025 of this Code, any vehicle parked in violation of this section shall be subject to an immediate tow and removal to a city vehicle pound or authorized garage.

...and of course we have to throw in the near right hook at Merchandise Mart.

351 N Orleans St. 311 reports submitted. 17 violations in less than 15 minutes. F*ck the city. They're doing absolutely nothing about enforcement.

See my post below. :-(

I'm in communications with the CPD about keeping police vehicles out of the bike lane in front of the academy on Jackson. They've responded favorably in the past, but apparently need reminders... there were four squads parked in the lane yesterday, and three the day before. I sent these images (from yesterday) to the academy, and received an email thanking me for bringing the matter to their attention. We'll see.

125 S Franklin St. 311 report submitted. Any thought to a nuisance suit against the cab companies for being total wankers?

Geez, look at all the crap in the bike lane there! I haven't seen a street sweeper since Rahm called it quits in this town. No wonder many streets are flooded when it rains. I think city workers have been on a slowdown since then also. Potholes, lights out, crap by the sewers ... no 311 response, very little is getting done now from what I see. I guess that they are taking a break till Lori takes over.

Speaking from experience...

Companies like the Corporate FedEx and UPS and DHL and Pepsi and Coke and Beer Delivery Companies have an account with the City of Chicago where they just pay the tickets their drivers get every 2 weeks or 30 days.

The Franchise FedEx and Franchise UPS vehicle drivers are made to pay the tickets by their bosses.

The Liquor distribution vehicles are an Unknown factor...going to depend on the fleet manager probably.

What about all the Uber and Lyft Wankers?

4th Ward Alderwoman Sophia King will be hosting a meeting TOMORROW evening to discuss plans for bike lanes in the South Loop community.

This is an important opportunity for residents of the 4th Ward to show their support of complete streets and protected bikeways. The South Loop deserves streets that keep people of all ages and abilities safe, especially people walking and biking." style="width: 500px; height: 649px; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid;" class="CToWUd a6T" width="500" height="649" border="0"/>

What: 4th Ward constituent meeting on bikeways
Where: Grace Place, 637 S. Dearborn St.
When: TOMORROW, Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at 6:00 p.m.

Earlier this year, Chicago Department of Transportation shared plans to make improvements to several South Loop streets to make walking and biking safer and easier. Planned enhancements include upgrades to the Harrison Street protected bike lane and a new neighborhood bikeway along Polk Street, Plymouth Court, and 9th Street.

These improvements will encourage more South Loop residents and visitors to walk and bike to get around, while helping to prevent crashes.

Can't make it? Email Prentice Butler, Ald. King's chief of staff, if you are a ward resident or a community-based organization, and let the alderwoman's office know why complete streets are needed to keep all roadway users safe:

There won't be any Uber or Lyft ride-share vehicles in the bike lanes on Wednesday 5-8-19 in Chicago. They'll be on strike for higher wages. But I'm sure that all those ride-share riders will behave in the same idiotic fashion when they ride their cars into work.

Love the animation! A carload of deplorables. ;-)
