Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

Although I can see the logic behind the weekend enforcement plan, especially in entertainment areas, I would think a weekday crackdown would really get motorist's attention and also add a few (more) bucks to Chicago's cash-strapped coffers.

A weekday bike lane crackdown ticketing spree could happen ONE TIME per week for a couple hours and it would have a really good impact. I encourage people to:

a) have the police non-emergency number on speed dial and at least for a day, a week report all the bike lane parking you see.

b) call and talk to your local elected officials, asking them for both improved enforcement efforts and physically protected bike lanes installed (in the appropriate areas).

I think the best approach IS to talk to the aldermen of the affected areas of the bike lanes and ask for improved enforcement. In the Sun-Times article above Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) and Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) encouraged and approved of the weekend ticketing crackdown for the downtown and Wicker Park areas.

Different day. Same results. This first a** munch had an issue with me taking his picture. Apparently cyclists aren't the only drivers on the road, and I should simply go around him by driving into traffic.

Driver parked in two way bike lanes on Washington on the loop. Ironically there were free parking spaces next to him.

Seems to me that if you have a vanity plate and/or a uniquely decorated car, you shouldn't drive and park like an asshat. You'll be easily remembered.

Steve, this recent article reveals a sort of smilar situation and the process to find a resolution to the problem. Reach out to ask the alderman/police/city administrative judges for a clarification on whether it's legal to park sticking out into the bike lane.

Isn't this some sort of medical facility that enforcement types might give an unofficial pass to.

Tom,

It is the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind. There is plenty of space for the bus to park/stand in front of the parked cars to the right.
