The Chainlink

They have it torn up yet again for what, the 4th time in as many months?

It's not very safe for riding as there is no room for bikes with the cars driving on the bike lanes through the many construction zones in that area.  One can take another route like Clyborn or Milwaukee but if one is simply trying to access the local businesses on that stretch it's pretty dicey.

Unfortunately I've found myself needing to go to Staples quite a bit lately.  Maybe I just need to find another Staples, PetSmart, Compucenter and TigerDirect nearby and just quit visiting this area on my errand runs.

I understand that infrastructure stuff needs to be done under the roads every once in a while but does anyone know why they need to keep going back and digging this up every few weeks?  Is it just poor planning, incompetence, or extra money collecting dust that just needs to be spent?

What's going on there?

I'm a commerical electrician (or at least used to be back when there was work) and have laid a few miles of pipe in few miles of trenches so I've been sort of watching what is going on here each time they have dug it up.

It seems to be that they are digging in the same places (especially just to the South of the Elston/Logan intersection.  It seems to be always People's gas although I think I saw some phone cops* out there doing some fiber work a couple of times.   Looks like a Cluster-Frak if you ask me.

It's possible that because I only ride by there every few days I've missed other trades/utilities doing work in this same area but I really don't know all the details of what is going on here.  Having run similar jobs it just looks sort of haphazard and poorly-planned and coordinated between the utility crews and the city with scheduling or whatnot.  It could be that something was done wrong and needs to be re-done.  It's only money...

Isn't this stretch slated for a major renovation in the future with cycle tracks and the whole nine yards like it is further south?  I was wondering if anyone knows any more about the plan and the timetable/schedule for what should be (hopefully) a finished project.     I've been accused of being impatient at times -especially when it effects my daily routine repeatedly and over a long period.

*Phone Cops is an obscure WKRP in Cincinnati reference from the late 70's.   I'm showing my age here ;)  Back in Wisconsin all the electricians would call the phone guys "phone cops" and was universally understood in the trade even by those who never saw the original TV show.

I learn something new every day.  ;)

James- I don't know what's going on in that stretch of Elston, but I bet if you called Ald. Waguespack's and/or Ald. Moreno's office, they'd be able to tell you.

Phone Cops:
