I'm wanting to come see (JFK) http://www.assassinationtheater.com/ for the Sep 12 5pm show.  Not wanting to pay $200 for a hotel room downtown.

Amtrak is being considered, but need hotel and mass transit options.

Is the Congress Hostel OK?

Motel 6 near Joliet is $60.  But a return mass transit does not get in until 6am.

Motel 8640 Ogden Ave, Lyons near Summit Amtrak is $75 seems reasonable.

Other hotels?

Drive in, then drive out to Joliet for a night is cheapest option.

Congress Hotel and Chicago Hostel are 2 different places. They're both okay and well-located. Joliet and Lyons are not good for your purposes.

Check the Midway airport area. Lots of clean national chain hotels and easy access to the rest of the city via the Orange Line.
Unless there is a huge event and everything is sold out, usually there are some decent options close to downtown on Travelocity.

How about Warm Showers or AirBnB? If you're bringing your bike and panniers, I'd highly recommend the first choice. It's free. Just bring a small gift for your hosts. Check the interactive map for locations in the city to see what's best suited for you. Otherwise, I'd go with the "private room" option on the second choice and do the same with the map.

Are you biking somewhere? Do you have google search for hostels in Chicago? There's a stretch of hotels on Lincoln 5500 area for $55-65 a night. Buses will take you to the blue line O'Hare. Also the red line to State street.
The congress hostel has nice beds for a reasonable price.

Joliet is very far. Motel 6 in Schiller Park on River Road near O'Hare airport.
