Tragedy Strikes: Deaths, injuries reported after vehicle hits bicyclists in Michigan

Details are very sketchy but eight cyclists, including children, were hit by a motorist in Kalamazoo County..   Not clear yet how many are dead/injured.

My prayers go out to the victims and their families.

"Authorities say a vehicle slammed into a group of at least eight bicyclists in western Michigan, leaving an unknown number of people dead and others injured."

:-( I can't believe what I'm reading. My thoughts go out to the cycling community in Kalamazoo.

A pickup truck plowed into a group of bicyclists including children along a western Michigan road, killing at least five people with a weekly riding group, according to local reports.

Cops apprehended a driver fleeing the crash site near Cooper Township about three miles north of Kalamazoo Tuesday evening.

A witness, who narrowly missed being struck, saw the driver hit least eight bicyclists with the bike club, WOOD-TV reported.

It's very simple.  A criminal must be prosecuted.

That is absolutely horrendous.  Just the worst.  I love to ride around in Michigan.  This scares the crap out of me.  Those poor cyclists were doing nothing other than existing when some monster eradicated them.  I had better not hear anyone refer to this as an "accident."

I've read several reports (probably many duplicates picked up from the news wires, but still). So far, I've not seen the word "accident" used. The article in the NY Times begins:

Five people were killed and four others were injured on Tuesday night after a pickup truck plowed into a group of bicyclists on a road about seven miles north of Kalamazoo, Mich., the authorities said.

No mention of the fact that a human was presumably behind the wheel and that it wasn't actually the pickup truck's fault (this isn't a Stephen King novel, after all). Still, the fact that it wasn't referred to as "an accident" is an improvement.

My first thoughts exactly...

The headline in The Atlantic calls it an accident.  They're getting eradicated on Facebook for doing so.

"We are not just bicyclists but Mothers, Fathers, Children, Husbands, Wives, Sisters, Brothers, Aunts, Uncles, Sons and Daughters," the Facebook post continues. "God please embrace those injured and open your arms to those taken tonight."

MLive.com is probably going to be as up-to-date as any other news source in this case.

Does the Facebook link just point to the Kalamzoo Strong site? Strange though it may be, there are one or two of us who don't actually use FB. Thx...

The Facebook link is to a group people can join. I think both will have helpful information so you don't necessarily need to use FB to help.

I'd be real surprised if I didn't need a FB account to join a FB group. When I visited the link it prompted me to login. *sigh*
