We're not sure if a deep technical discussion has ever taken place in the Chainlink forum, but we at Active Trans thought it was worth exploring...if any of you have any insights to perfection in the art of the "snot rocket" - we'd love to hear them.

Not an expert on snot rockets. But the headline on the thread would make a good porno title.
There was a discussion once about a cyclist who was blowing his snot on other cyclists.  Can't seem to find it at this moment.

Here is a thread about other gross objects that may come out when riding.

Here is one about etiquette while riding with a cold.

And the one about the cyclist who spits.

I simply searched the word "snot" in the forum section.

Last winter I forgot i was wearing a balaclava before hawking a loog. that was disgusting...

The timing of this thread is absolutly hilarious.  Today was the first day I gave up being classy and caved into the farmers blow, repeatedly.  My nose was running like crazy and it was just too annoying not to try it out.

As an amateur snotier I have a few observations.  Its always going to go farther back than you think.  As in your eyes might be facing forward but your left nostril is pointed somewhat towards the rear of your body.  Take into account how fast you are riding as that will have significant impact on how far backwards it flies too.

It's embarrassing that I've come to this, but sniffling for the last 45 minutes of my commute was driving me insane.

Wow, that's a lot of thought devoted to:

After you've rotated to the back, take left hand from bar, simultaneously turn head to left, use right index finger to cover right nostril, blow, then turn head to right, cover left nostril, blow, don't miss a beat and hold your line..

Sheesh!

I think I started a discussion on that very topic- actually, the topic of being aware that other cyclists may be behind you and that snot rockets travel much farther than you may think they do. So please be courteous when clearing your nostrils :)

Well, Jamie,

This is a technique discussion.  We need to account for any ambiguities or questions about proper form.

Any thought given to, I don't know, maybe carrying some Kleenex in your pocket?

Aim the left nasal opening towards cars passing too closely and the right nasal rocket bay at car doors opening into the right side.

Actually I tried it only once on the open road away from any traffic. It is risky cycling behavior and messy too, as the hard part comes out... its stringy entrails catch on to the side of the face. Yuk!

To keep it from just smearing all down your own face, you have to inhale deeply and make the first blast of air as hard and sharp as possible.

As for keeping from hitting someone else--try aiming at your own front tire.  Learning to adjust for windage is part of the fun!
