The Chainlink

So a lot us like our beer and coffee, and ride all over the city trying places out. Well, sadly, I am super addicted to those two but my trinity is completed with cupcakes and sweets. So to further my knowledge who in your opinions has the best? Where should I bike to next? Blue city cycle said no to Ace and said go west for doughnuts at Bridgeport bakery. What say you!

And if you're in Evanston, check out Bennison's. They've got a bit of everything.

Dinkel's has been earning donut accolades since my dad was a kid, when it was his neighborhood bakery. We really do have a wealth of great food in this town.  This thread is making me hungry.  ;)

I've been meaning to check out Dat Donut for a while, but now that I've heard this news, I'll have to make it a priority.  Donuts and Uncle John's BBQ, mmmm

The glazed at the Doughnut Vault are definitely worth a try (not that impressed with the other varieties), but now that so many quality donut places have opened (and nearby too), I'm less likely to stand in line.  Anybody tried Firecakes on Hubbard yet?

Dats Donuts, as Jared mentioned, is very good, so good that they deserve more discussion. In my opinion they are have perfected the old fashioned donut. So full of crags, so rugged and softly crunchy on the outside, so soft and fluffy on the inside. Truly the best Old Fashioned I have ever had (I eat a lot of donuts). So very highly recommended.

Also good, but in a different way, is The Vault near The Merch Mart. Here I would recommend just the regular glazed donut. I don't know if thy do old fashioned donuts there, we go for the soft, pillow-like, cushions of deliciousness that are their yeast donuts.

Both places are very good.

Sounds like we have the basis for a delicious Donut Ride. At least we'll be able to pedal off some of the extra calories.

My taste buds appreciate all of the great input, but my soon to be expanded gut does not.

Sounds like an inspired, waist-expanding ride idea. Yum!

Share your interest. Firecakes on Hubbard has great donuts (try the bacon glazed special). My personal fave cupcakes are at More on State & Delaware (they have a food truck too). I second Floriole and Bittersweet for great cakes/pastries & lunches.

I second Anne Alt's recs for my local Evanston bakery Bennison's.  They're particularly strong in French style pastries, like macarons (crunchy little meringue disks sandwiching interesting fillings, like pistachio, red velvet or lavender--not to be confused with coconut macaroons).

[This slideshow in Serious Eats claims that Oak Park's Sugar Fixe has the best macarons around, followed by Pierrot Gourmet in the Peninsula Hotel and then Bennison's as third best.  A visit to Oak Park is now in order.]

If I want to feel Viennese rather than Parisian, I head to Lutz Bakery, on Montrose just west of Western.  If you eat inside, you're treated to an elegant white tablecloth event, with your "Rum Krokant", "Schwarzwälderkirschtorte (Black Forest cake) or "Haselnusstorte (hazelnut torte)" served on chinaware and your hot cocoa served in a silver cocoa pot on a silver platter.  In summer, the outside back garden is the place to dine.

Would you want to organize this ride? I'd be totally down with riding a cupcake challenge. I've in the past ride between Molly's, swirls and sprinkles.
