The Chainlink

Who stayed to see if I was ok after an incident at Grand and Milwaukee. I am ok and my bike is fine. The driver was nice we exchanged info and he offered to drive me to the police station, the hospital or work. Thank you extra much to the man and woman who stayed. Thanks a bunch Chicago is lucky to have you as members of the cycling community.

I'm glad to hear that you and your bike are okay and the driver was reasonable.  Three cheers for the cyclists who stayed.  Having a sense of community is good for all of us.

I'll give a cheer for the driver too, since they actually bothered to stick around and be responsible.

Glad your OK.

It's nice when drivers are decent about hitting you; good fro them.

If anyone wants to know more about Grand and Milwaukee's crash rate, check out these links:

Initial intersection crash analysis for Milwaukee Avenue

Put the first cycle track somewhere else

Too much talking, not enough documenting

Those photos are amazing!  If they are sent over to the Urban Planning students at the college maybe someone could come up with some good, inexpensive solutions. A few things jump out at me.

What jumps out at me are:

-Fixing the poor pavement conditions on nearly all legs

-Refreshing all pavement markings, but making all crosswalks zebra/international style

-Adding bike boxes on all legs

-Enforcement and better signage about the "no left turns" during certain periods from Halsted Street

-Bike lane markings through the intersection on Halsted and Milwaukee

-Eliminating the parking (at all hours) on northbound Halsted south of Grand and turning this into the bike lane it needs to be

-Improving overhead lighting

-Upgrading the signal heads to make them easier to see

-Test a very short "all red"

What are your ideas, Michelle?

I've ridden through this intersection hundreds of times over the years, and I think this is a great set of recommendations.  When I mentioned the "all red" idea previously, this is one of the intersections that inspired it.

Definitely. The intersection would also greatly benefit from a dedicated bike lane on Grand east of Halsted.

This is a total clusterf*** during rush hour for cyclists leaving downtown and trying to connect to Milwaukee/Elston, and (partially due to the omnipresent broken glass) is probably the only place I am ever tempted to ride briefly on the sidewalk.

For real, the few times I've been hit they just say "are you ok" out the window and drive away, or just drive away. Glad you're ok, and stay safe out on these streets, during the winter things tend to get a bit hectic.

Can you share the details of the incident Jen?
