Would it help to suggest signage to the Park District?  I thought of this:

This is a SHARED USE PATH.  You ARE NOT SPECIAL!

Isn't there a law that we should all have bells?

As a daily commuter on the south side I'd suggest:  'Bicyclists, please use a bell!'

According to Wiki something, there are approximately 4300 road-miles in Chicago.

How many miles are now dedicated for bicycles? 6? 12? 25?

Riding home on the LFP tonight I noticed signs painted on the pavement starting north of Ohio.

"Share path" picture of runners "single file"

"Speak up 'on your left'"

"Shift right slow or stop"

I would probably not have noticed them at all had I not been riding slower than a lot of joggers since I am a slow rider anyway and had a good head wind!  Nice try, CPD.  Now how about some signs at eye level:  "Hey!  Look at the signs on the pavement."

Ineffective signs on the pavement are cheaper than effective signs overhead. It's a start.

I thought the new signage was great. Most of it is on the trail itself, but this one was more vertical.

Thanks for letting us know, and thanks to Friends.  I agree wholeheartedly with the idea and any attempt at reminders and education is good.  I am sure it would cost a lot more money to get more vertical signs, but maybe some at entrance points to the path?

CPD didn't put in those signs; the Friends of the Lakefront Trail (aka Active Trans, Friends of the Parks and the Chicago Runners Association) had it done.

It will go out for bidding later this year, to be built in three phases (which may occur simultaneously, I don't know). Read my proposal for an alternative to the $45 million project

But wait, the money has to go to the Flyover!  The Flyover will solve all problems!  Spend sixty million on the flyover!  (wasn't that suppose to start this summer?)  What a joke and waste of good money.

Some of our less crowded off-street paths (like the Major Taylor Trail and Burnham Greenway) almost count as dedicated bike space, although they are technically shared paths.  Between the two, that's about 8.5 miles - a drop in the bucket compared to all that road mileage.

I saw those creatively-painted signs too, as well as an illegible one that said to text a certain number to something. I only saw them between Navy Pier and Fullerton--there were none north of there (I only went as south as Jackson today). I had to get a picture of some of them.
