I saw one of the stop sign stings for bikers this morning on Wells Street.  It was pretty obvious as to what it was, but people were still blowing through the stop sign.

Anyone here get caught?  Any thoughts on this?

One thing that I thought was funny was this girl who passed me while I was stopping, and then was flagged over and still tried to go.  The police stepped in front of her...it looked like she was going to make a break for it, but she ended up stopping.

And a reason to have these random checks.

They were checking this afternoon on Lincoln @ Southport. Right in front of me a guy rides through red light without stopping and did get pulled over.
If you are so oblivious that you don't even notice the cop standing in the street, you make a pretty convincing case why the Idaho stop is a bad idea.
i don't agree with "john lennon was at best the 5th most impressive beatle." so not all of us can agree to that statment. also, it wasn't the lyrics to imagine that i saw quoted, but i'll look again farther back in the thread. it's hard to know what one is referring to without the text being referenced.

I think we can all agree that John Lennon was at best the fifth most impressive Beatle, and that anyone who cites the lyrics to "Imagine" as part of an argument can be deemed to have lost.

I think we can also all agree that at least one poster in this thread should do a bit of reading on Pigovian taxation.
It was from the song "Revolution."

I apologize that kids these days don't seem to know their music reaching backwards beyond the MJ era.

Perhaps I should have quoted Thriller?

i learned a lot today. IMO is not Internation Maritime Organizaiton nor International Mathematical Olympiad. and LIB is not women's lib nor Lib island, but rather League of Illinois Bicyclists. thanks, chainlink.

Response from LIB:
We've talked about it at an LIB board meeting. Besides the fact that there would likely be much opposition to it from police groups and probably others, I'm opposed to it and the board agrees - both for safety reasons and its contradiction of the "Share the Road: Same Rights, Same Rules"
philosophy.
and by MJ, you mean Michael Jackson, not Michael Jordan :)

oh. i had a john lennon song in my head today as i was thinking about the mosque at ground zero fiasco: "...i just believe in me."

sorry to get off the stop-sign subject. i get into tangents sometimes. that's how i roll ;)

Tangents are only natural -or so says Sir Isaac Newton.

The whole "Ground Zero Mosque" debate pisses me off. Both "sides" are being disingenuous with BS talking points and spin-doctoring.

I'm against any mosque being built anywhere. I also disagree with any church being built anywhere. They are terrible wastes of resources and labor/time. Islam is a scary religion that tends towards violence when they don't get their way. But most other religions share this "feature" -especially Xtianity, which is one of the most problematic and violent religions second only to Islam. Perhaps that is because they are both "new" religions and haven't yet been tempered by time. The older a religion the more they tend to mellow.

But in the end, it's a private-property issue and they should be able to build whatever church in whatever religion wherever they want as long as it passes local zoning ordinances (which I believe this already has). If those people who think it is such a terrible thing care that much let them stand outside on public property and protest it from now until eternity which is also their right under the First Amendment. I don't care either way. I'm too busy riding to care much more than that.

I'll quote the great 5th-best Beetle again:

well said, james. but i want to add that i believe variuos people are violent, not religion. the religion provides an excuse for what they do, good or bad.

in the meantime, i'd like to imagine no stop-signs, no cars...it's easy if i try.

Should have quoted Stop Sign Sting . . .

Whatever, it's all the same nonsense. Lennon was awful and citing his awful lyrics to make some inane point is awful, too. To quote his better:

Let's all drink to the death of a clown
Let's all drink to the death of a clown
While I think it is important to obey traffic laws on a bike, sometimes it is better to disregard stop signs when riding. I say this because I want to be a responsible cyclist and be respectful of motorists at stop signs but when I stop or significantly slow, often times the motorist will wave me on even if I insist its their turn. Don't get me wrong, I am happy that there are motorists out there who are courteous and give the right of way to a cyclist. However, I find it awkward if I can clearly see the car get to the stop before me and once I stop and yield to them they wait and wave me on. I by no means feel I am entitled to blow through a stop sign if a motorist is waiting b/c of some self righteous belief system but I am just trying to avoid those awkward bike/bar traffic moments I described.
Sting got that right.

Nutball, you say?

"I think that all of us in the industry would frankly welcome... a gradual increase in the federal fuel tax of 25 cents a year," said Bob Lutz, vice chairman of GM, at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. Per CNN, Lutz "saw a lot of value in a steady [gas] tax rise to much higher levels."

Oh, also, speaking as the guy who started the Wicker Park light giveaways (an idea from Seattle), I can guarantee that it was never meant to be a punitive program -- just a small investment in making a safer neighborhood for everyone. Light laws are still enforced pretty strictly in many cycling-friendly jurisdictions, and for very good reason.
