The Chainlink

My Yakima bike rack was stolen last night from the top of my car parked
on Leland Ave just east of Sheridan in Uptown. It was locked to the top
of my car and someone used a pry bar to force it off. It has two locking
Steelhead trays (which were also locked rendering the rack virtually
useless to a thief), a front wheel mount (fork), and a fairing which had
a bunch of faded stickers on the back of it and brand new stainless
steel hardware. I can describe the stickers in more detail if someone
sees something like this around.

Please contact me if anyone sees something. NO QUESTIONS ASKED REWARD IF FOUND/RETURNED.

That sucks. Possibility of theft is one reason my wife and I didn't invest in a roof system or tow-hitch.

Our trunk-clip rack is janky for sure, but I can remove it when I'm done with the bike and take it inside.

this is really a shame that these things are getting stolen. so sorry to read this. racks are expensive and often are customized so they are hard to replace to the same exact specs, etc.

I cannot believe what theives are stealing now days : recently a fellow chainlinker told me a friend had their second (!) catalytic converter stolen; and now car batteries are getting stolen. unbelieveable.

nothing is sacred anymore.

be vigilant folks

I just had my Yakima roof rack stolen off the top of my car during the past week. It was parked on a busy residential street in the Ravenswood/Andersonville area. This is the 2nd rack I've had stolen in 3 years (the first was stolen when the car was parked behind my condo).  It's not  listed on Craiglist.  It had 2 Viper bike mounts and a Q-Stretch kit (the latter, being uncommon).  If you have any info, you may contact me at trivegican at yahoo dot  com.  Thanks!

Michael,

I'm curious - were the rack towers locked?

I got lucky. My Yakima rack was almost stolen a few years ago in Andersonville/Ravenswood. I pulled out of parking spot and q stretch bar fell off. The locks apparently deterred them enough or someone scared em off. Prob the later. I no longer leave on rack. Edge of hood along door is dented from crow bar

My roof rack got stolen 3 years ago, 1/2 block from the Rogers Park police station. Moved on to a hitch rack that I keep in the trunk and pull out when I need.

Yes ... they were locked with Q-Locks.  Looks like they pried it off.
