Hello Chicago Cyclists!!

So I have been out of CHI for a few years and still miss it terribly . . . 

I was contacted about a job in St. Louis and was wondering what the bicycling scene was like and would appreciate any insight either on the Forum or to my inbox.  I would also like to know about the bar/bike scene as well . . .I have been locked in Knoxville and am very open to a move . . .

I spent a LOT of weekends in St. Louis when my girlfriend lived there for the past two years. I am a "bike St. Louis evangelist." Everyone told her she would need a car, but she found otherwise. We got around everywhere on bike. I actually miss St. Louis a lot. I'll message you...

I'm commenting to follow this thread! I've been considering moving to St. Louis for some time but have similar concerns/questions about the scene and general safety.

There's the Katy Trail, just west of St. Louis, across the Missouri River

Two trains in each direction daily.

Actually, it's 5 trains a day in each direction. One of those 5 trains is the long distance train to San Antonio(Texas Eagle), and on that train you only can take your bike(after doing a bike reservation, at the time you get your Amtrak ticket) to checked baggage stations(Joliet, Bloomington-Normal, Springfield, and Saint Louis).

The one from Texas is often very late and they don't want to sell tickets in advance at the station in Illinois.  Just use the similar timed one from St. Louis.

I agree with you on that, the Chicago-Saint Louis trains stick closer to schedule vs. the Texas Eagle. I've ridden the Texas Eagle before, and like other Amtrak long distance trains, it definitely can be impacted by waiting for freight trains to pass.

Also, If you take the Chain Of Rocks bridge to Illinois, Madison County Transit bought the Rail Road right of ways, built a whole bunch of bike trails, put bus stops where the trails meet the road.  http://www.mct.org/
