Finally made it up to Smart Bike Parts at 3031 W. Armitage. It is now my favorite store in the city. Probably the only LBS that is actually less expensive than purchasing parts and tires on-line. They are not really local to me, but well worth the little trip. Highly recommended. I realize this won't be news to many Chainlinkers, but I just wanted to give a shout out, because I had such a nice experience dropping by and buying a bunch of stuff.

I second that.  They built up my single speed for $30 (didn't buy any parts there) and the owner always gives me a discount. I would say they're top notch in service and labor.
The owner shares a last name with you though, maybe you get a secret Puetz deal.

I've also always had good luck with Smart, both for parts and repairs that I needed done faster than I get around to doing things myself.

Dear Chainlinkers,

Thanks for turning me on to this place. I stopped by today for some service advice and to buy some parts & they were great. Took care of my problem on the spot & installed my new pedals for me as well.

Will definitely be bringing my business there from now on.

Smart bikes is the bomb.  The owner races Cyclocross and his store helped a little with my build this season.  They are new to me, but I have already been back many times.  They always lay some knowledge on me and their service and employees are terrific.  Also, one of the last few stores in this city that have bins of used parts to purchase.

Thanks Smart Bikes, you deserve a shout out!  Or a hand-up like they say in CX!

The dudes at Smart Bikes are real genuine, knowledgeable, and run a great establishment.  The only other shop that I've been going to besides Smart Bikes lately, is The Bike Lane on Milwaukee.  Those guys are super awesome too, and have a great thing going.  Shops like Oscar Wastyn on Fullerton, Kozy's, etc. have all given very negative experiences to me.  Excessive pricing, bad attitudes, mockery, etc.

ditto. they are the best. in warm weather when you come in (and you can always bring you bike in) you are handed a cold beer. and they have a spare parts bin that has phenomenal deals (I bought a brand new helmet for $8.00, neon bottle cages for $2.00 each) etc. pay cash and save even more !!!

and when you need a special order part...just call (and talk to a real human that you can understand) and they almost always have the part there in about 2 days. they ROCK !!!

Thanks for the tip...being on a budget, I need all the help i can get.
They also have a "24 hours" text service.  I have yet to test their response time, but I guess they accept and respond to text messages for just about any kind of information/advice.

these guys are great, I'm just sad they moved as they used to be a block away from me.

Thanks for the mention. I'd never been there before, so I went there last weekend for a couple of little things I needed. Great place, and it's near me too.

thanks , out here in the boonies, we don't have that kind of stuff.  Now when i ride to work i don't even see another biker.  They are all gone.  Is there someplace to park a car since i will be coming from the suburbs?
George Christensen who is a world tourer (see his blog here) and used to be a bike messenger back in the 80's loves this place.  Have been meaning to visit for years based on his recommendation.
