Saw this on Everyblock this AM - Hit & Run on a cyclist

I wanted to pass this along:

Hit and Run Bicycler/Van Accident This AM on Sheridan @ Northshore

Posted by Robbie Klinger

I witnessed a terrible hit and run accident approx around 8:15am today. An unmarked white contruction van hit a bicycler on the NW corner of Sheridan @ Northshore ave and took off west down Northshore. The vans passanger window was shattered in the collision- and only a brief driver description/ plate was caught by a construction worker working above on the new apt development on the corner.

PLEASE if you see a van with a broken passenger window with this description around East Rogers Park, report it to the police. This driver needs to be caught. Some of us witneness' belief the van driver was working around the neighborhood and his van could be spotted if recognized.

Thank you!

ps- The biker had some serious face trauma but was consious and was taken by ambulance and I believe will be ok. Two nurses stopped (and may others) to help until paramedics arrived.

This is terrible.

I quit using Everyblock because the anti-biking cabal has taken to down-voting any pro-cycle posts to the point they get deleted.

Hopefully that thread doesn't turn into another cycle-bashing car-centric Stepford-wives no-bikes lunch counter where any pro-bike voices get "unthanked" until they disappear.

I know what you mean about the anti-bike sentiment. I didn't quit using it as I have found a lot of useful information for my area on there, but I haven't posted or responded on the forums as much due to what you described. I hope it doesn't turn into a cyclist bashing thread or "were they wearing a helmet?" debate either, but maybe someone did see something and it could be of some use.  It still boggles my mind that people have the nerve to hit someone with their car and just run off- like they hit a squirrel or an inanimate object. There is no excuse for it- no matter if they didn't have insurance or whatever a driver's reasoning is to leave the scene of the accident and I hope they get caught and someone presses criminal charges on them.  It just really sickens me that so many people have absolutely no conscience.  Sorry to rant about it, I just get so angry when I read about hit and runs. If someone runs after causing another person pain, injury and death, it isn't an accident any more, it is criminal.

Cars are so dangerous to other road users -and the hit&run aspect (and just how prevalent that is) just goes to show that people are not up to the responsibility of operating one.

The city needs to get tough on speeding.   Hitting a bike or ped at more than 25MPH is like a death sentance for the victim.  There is no hurry worth killing people over.  If only they could lower the speed limit of all vehicles on surface streets to 20MPH it would make getting hit by one of these jerks much more survivable.  It's like the survivability doubles every 5MPH you slow down the cars.  At 30MPH the survivability of being hit drops in half from 25.  At 35MPH is drops in half yet again from 30.  And after that it gets even more pronounced.  There are MANY MANY MANY cars zooming around on Chicago streets at 40+ MPH.

20MPH is what it should be, with no 5MPH fudge factor.   People should be pulled over for going 21 and the fines should be HEAVY.

The lives of Peds and cyclists are worth it.

Of course, if I were to post such an opinion on that so-called "everyblock" site this opinion would be down-voted and censored.  What a crap forum.

There is a special place in hell for hit & run drivers. I hope they catch this driver and he/she is thrown through a windshield head-first. Sorry for the sentiments, but as a hit & run survivor I have an bitter hate for these cowards....
